My dog is coughing after eating squirrel bones. What can I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Rat Terrier | Male | neutered | 14 years and 6 months old | 22 lbs

My dog has been hacking for a couple of days (and nights) after swallowing some squirrel bones. Sometimes he goes a little while without coughing, then starts again. It doesn't sound good. Can I give him something to dislodge it. Maybe it's a claw stuck to his stomach lining. Otherwise, he is acting normally and eating. His poops are fine.

Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. It could be that the bone scratched his throat and that's way he has been hacking. Please, offer Wilbur soft food only as it may be easier for him to swallow. However, if the symptoms persist for longer than 24-48hrs, you should get him checked by your local vets.
