Why is my 5-month puppy tired, eating less, and has diarrhea?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | unspayed | 5 months and 1 day old | 15 lbs

5 month old puppy, has been lacking normal energy the last two days. Has been eating less (eating some, but not normal). Had some constipation today, followed by diarrhea shortly after. Not quite lethargic, but not interested in playing. Sleeping a lot. Does not seem to be experiencing pain (no wimpering or whining)

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Mitzi. Poor girl. It sounds like she may be sick if she is eating less and having some diarrhea. I can give you a home remedy for her to see if that helps. Feed her a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet. If the diarrhea continues on the bland diet, she refuses to eat the bland diet, she starts vomiting food, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, she will need to see a vet right away. Hi there and thank you for using Boop by Petco to address your concern. Diarrhea can be caused by many things such as diet, intestinal parasites and viral infections. I would recommend initiating a bland diet as outlined below. However, with the symptoms you have described, it sounds as though he may also be dehydrated. I would recommend taking him in to be seen by a veterinarian so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. He may need fluids administered under the skin for hydration and further testing (parvo testing) since he is so young and still has the potential to come down with parvo if he has come in contact with it. I have 2 month old gsd puppy and she is not eating. She has diarrhea. What should i do? And plz tell me about her vaccination. She is looking quite lethargic but she plays well. I don't know whats happening. Plz help
There are several possible causes of diarrhea including food intolerance, parasites, viral or bacterial infection, and stress. Puppies with diarrhea can become dehydrated quickly. If you have access to a veterinarian, I recommend taking Misty in to be evaluated as soon as you can. If you do not have access to a veterinarian, you can offer Misty a bland diet with rice and egg. Try feeding several small meals per day rather than one or two large meals. Once her diarrhea improves you can start adding back in her regular food. When she is feeling better she is due for her first set of puppy vaccinations, and this will need to be repeated at 12 and 16 weeks of age. I hope she is feeling better soon.

Thanks for using Boop by Petco! This can certainly be due to dietary indiscretion in which case it should get better by discontinuing whatever upset her belly. However, this could also be other things such as intestinal parasites or even a gastrointestinal infection such as parvovirus. Start her on a bland diet mainly composed of boiled chicken and white rice for the next 2-3 days. If no improvement, have her evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment.
