My dog on UTI diet is vomiting, eating less, and stool is off. Urgent?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 4 years and 4 months old | 17.5 lbs

Dog started Royal Canin S/O 6 wks ago due to 2 UTIs in the past 6 months and crystallization in the bladder after 2nd round of antibiotics. Since, she's still defecting 2x/day but is producing less stool (thinner and in smaller pieces but moist). The other morning, she vomited food from 12 hrs prior, which has never happened before. She also seems to be eating less but is drinking more water and urinating more from the diet. How concerning and emergent is this? Called and her vet is off today.

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Louise. This does need to be checked out by a vet; however, if she is no longer vomiting, is still eating and drinking, does not have diarrhea, and isn't lethargic, then it's fine to wait until your regular vet is back on. Should she keep vomiting, stops eating, has diarrhea, or is very lethargic, then I would have her seen by a vet immediately. I hope this helps!

Antibiotics and urinary tract infections themselves can both cause nausea/vomiting. However, as you finished the antibiotics 5 days ago, it is less likely that the vomiting is due to the UTI antibiotics. If she has recently gotten table food or had access to food from the garbage, she may have a condition called pancreatitis caused by a sudden high fat meal that may cause vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain. A trip to your veterinarian for screening bloodwork to rule out a liver/kidney/pancreas issue as the cause of the vomiting, subcutaneous fluid therapy, anti-nausea medication (cerenia), and a prescription intestinal diet is advised. If you are not able to get an appointment immediately, I recommend feeding only a bland diet of boiled rice and chicken (with no regular kibble) for the next 3-5 days. Sometimes this alone helps resolve the symptoms of mild gastroenteritis. Good luck!

Thanks for using Boop by Petco! Sometimes antibiotics can cause a deceased appetite and anorexia. If that was the cause then she should start getting better in the next day or so. If no improvement, have her evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Good luck! I hope she does well!

Thanks for using Boop by Petco! I noticed in one of those pictures that his stool is really diarrhea and is black (which usually means a sign of bleeding). Vomiting and diarrhea can occur secondary to conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease, dietary indiscretion, parasites, among other possibilities. In addition, black stools can be indicative of bleeding into the small intestine or stomach which can happen secondary to an ulcer for instance. Bloody urine can be the result of an infection, stones, tumors, among other possibilities. I recommend that you have him evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. At the very least they can start him on medications to make him feel better and check his hydration status. In the meantime, keep water available at all times to try to prevent dehydration. We took my dog to our vet today for a UTI and our dog was prescribed ENROFLoxacin 136mg. Our dog threw up a lot after taking this RX. What alternatives are there to this medication. Especially if a dog has a sensitive stomach?
Thank you for using Boop by Petco. I recommend contacting Annie’s veterinarian to discuss the appropriate antibiotic for her. Medication choice depends on what type of infection they found and if culture/sensitively was performed. Be sure to feed her before medication. In some cases smaller can be given more frequently, or different antibiotic or possibly a long lasting injection may be given if she can not tolerate oral medications Good luck I hope she’s better soon.

I recommend that your have your dog examined by your veterinarian as soon as possible. Frequent urination can be a symptom of a lower urinary tract infection, cystitis, uroliths (crystals or stones) in the bladder, diabetes, kidney disease, or other metabolic disorders. Vomiting can also be a symptom of an underlying metabolic disorder or a simple GI upset. To control the vomiting until your appointment, withhold all food for the next 12-24 hours. Continue to provide water unless that is being thrown up as well. Then only provide sips of water or ice cubes. After 12-24 hours, reintroduce a bland diet of rice (2/3) and skinless, boiled chicken (1/3). Feed small frequent meals, waiting 1 hour between meals. Slowly transition back to your dog's normal diet over 24 hours.

Thanks for using Boop by Petco! This does not necessarily warrant a veterinary evaluation if it goes away on its own. Since she has improved, I would continue to monitor her for now. If this does not improve, I recommend you have her reevaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. They may decide at that point to try a different antibiotic if they think it is because of an infection. Best of luck!

It sounds like the diarrhea is resolving, so as long as that continues I wouldn't worry about seeing your vet. You can gradually transition back to his usual diet once the stool seems mostly formed. Urinating inside can occasionally be a sign of a urinary tract infection, urinary disease, or a disease that is causing dilute urine. If Louis seems to urinate more frequently or has another accident I'd recommend having your vet examine him and check a urine sample.

Phoebe was diagnosed with a stomach ulcer 3-4 weeks ago. She's on carafate, cerenia, & Prilosec. She's been doing good, but the past few days, she's puking and have incontinence. She's keeping down her food, but throwing up bile. Her poop is normal.

Throwing up bile is quite concerning, and her ulcers may be acting up despite the medication. It could be she needs a higher dose of her medication, but I cannot advise making any change to her medication without seeing her in person. She also should not be peeing while on Proin, so I'm wondering if she has a UTI causing the urinating. She does need to see a vet for these issues. If paying for a vet is an issue, you can see if your vet accepts payment plans, if there is a low cost clinic in your area, or you can apply for Care Credit online. There is also an organization called Red Rover that give grants for treatment of sick animals, and you can see if you qualify for one of their grants. First make sure she is eating her food without vomiting, give her only half of the food amount. if after an hour she seems to be ok and she is not vomiting, give her the second half of her food and the antibiotics. if she continues vomiting you will have to take her to your vet.

Thanks for using Boop by Petco! Loss of appetite can be observed with many conditions such as gastroenteritis, dietary indiscretion, kidney disease, pancreatitis, among many other possibilities. I am more concerned about the fact that she is not eating well and that needs to be further addressed as it is unlikely to be due to a urinary tract infection. I recommend that you have Luchadora reevaluated by your veterinarian on Saturday for further assessment and treatment. Keep in mind that if she is not feeling well, they may not proceed with vaccines that day. You may take in a urine sample that day. They would be able to check for these possibilities and others depending on the findings on exam. Treatment would be based on findings. Good luck and have a great day! Hoping for a speedy recovery!
