Is my dog's increased thirst and urination a medication side effect?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 30 lbs

After we did a biopsy on my 13 year old dog we found out that he had a mast cell tumor that needed to be removed. His blood work showed that his liver enzymes were over 500 and his creatine at 1.6, a point over the normal. His tumor has been removed and we have been giving him Denamarin 90/31/9 and Epakitin 180 mgs. A few days after the surgery my dog has become increasingly thirsty and peeing with more frequency. This never happened before. Is it possible that the medication is doing this?

Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. No, these medications do not increase thirst. If Lucky has been drinking more, you should take him back to your local vets to have urine and blood tested as this could be a sign of urinary tract infection or deterioration in kidney function. If you take a fresh urine sample with you, that will be of a great help.
