Cat with pancreatitis: Is intermittent vomiting normal? Best food?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | 10 lbs

Cat recently discharged (week ago) having signs of pancreatitis & likely cholangitis. Was prescribed an antibiotic & nausea medicine. Has held up fairly well. Has an appetite, alert, & in improved spirits. However, today & three days ago he did throw up some bile & food. He bounces back typically next day or hours after. I'm curious as to if this is normal, what something to look out for with pancreatitis & what are ideal food options? He has good days but every third day seems to have flare up

Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Symptoms of chronic pancreatitis / cholangitis include intermittent vomiting, lack of appetite, diarrhea, abdominal pain. The symptoms often wax and wane. The most important aspect of managing chronic pancreatitis in cats is diet. Casper should be on a very low fat diet. There are prescription diets available from your vets to manage this problem. Alternatively, you can feed your cat lean, cooked meat with small amounts of vegetables. Regarding medications, most of cats receive anti-nausea medicines and pain killers. Bouts of vomiting are normal in chronic pancreatitis but they should not be very frequent. If Capser continues to vomit every 2-3 days, you could try and change his diet to something containing less fat and less carbohydrates. I hope it will help. All the best for your Casper
