My senior dog has urinary incontinence. Is it age or a health problem?

My dog recently started experiencing urinary incontinence. I am wondering if this is due to age (12 years) or may be an issue that will require a veterinarian visit?

This could actually be due to a medical illness. It may be that Spike has a UTI or bladder stones causing his incontinence. I would have him seen by a vet for this problem. The vet can diagnose what is causing it and can treat him. Best of luck.

Your dog could be suffering from a UTI, polyps or a bladder stones or a tumor. This could also be old-age related or due to lack of estrogen. It is necessary to rule out as many causes in order to find the correct treatment that works. You will need to take your girl to your veterinarian for a thorough exam, and a urinalysis. UTI's are usually treated with antibiotics, bladder stones would likely need to be removed if on the larger side, and a tumor may need special treatment or surgery. If she suffers from estrogen-dependent incontinence there are several medications that work very well in controlling this. Please schedule an appointment with your veterinarian.

he has starting peeing anywhere he wants too - would this be a health issue?
Yes, if Frank has been housetrained in the past and does not normally have accidents, this would strongly suggest a medical problem of some kind. A urinary tract infection, bladder stones, or a systemic illness like Cushing's disease or diabetes would also be common causes of peeing in inappropriate places in an older dog like this. I would recommend taking Frank to the vet for an exam as soon as you are able to - he/she can do a urinalysis and general blood work if needed to help determine the problem and get him started on appropriate medication to treat it.

House trained dog has recently started weeing in the house, her bed... Everywhere. She's a 13yr old collie who has never had any problems in the home before. Nothing has changed in the house or her routine. What could be wrong?
At her age there are several things it can be. Your vet can collect a urine sample to check for a urinary tract infection. They can always draw some blood to check her kidneys and blood sugar and for Cushings disease. All these can cause an increase in drinking and urination which will lead to accidents. If all of that is normal, than she may be getting incontinent and they have medication for that also!

It sounds like your dog is suffering from incontinence. This can be caused by infection, stress, excessive thirst, problems with the spinal cord, or a weakened bladder. I would have him seen by a vet for this problem. There are medications that can be given to him to treat this problem depending on the cause of the incontinence. The vet can diagnose the cause of the incontinence, and can treat him for it.

In the past month my 14 year old dog has been peeing on the rugs. Never did he do this before. Today he peed right in front of me. He's not sick. What could it be?
This can a urinary infection, kidney disease or a sign of diabetes, or in continence at that age. Some of these will cause an increase in drinking water and no other signs until it is severe. It is best to have a urine sample checked at your vet to rule out some of these options. There is medicine available to treat and manage each of these

My dog has a urinary bladder problem. He keeps on pissing drop by drop. He is a bit old. I need advice on what medicine can help him
Tiger will need to be seen by your veterinarian for an exam. The vet will need to do a urinalysis to determine whether there is a bacterial infection, or crystals or bladder stones. He may also be incontinent due to losing sphincter tonus. As he is an old dog, there is always a possibility of a tumor or prostate problem. There is no one medication for all of that, so please take Tiger to your pet doctor for an exam and treatment if indicated.

My 14 year old male Shiba Inc has started peeing in the house, usually when he is within a few feet of me or my husband. This is net new behavior. He is otherwise healthy with no known health issues.
Sudden changes in behavior can sometimes signal a health issue, and accidents in an elderly dog can be caused by a number of things. Bladder infections can cause sudden accidents in the house, while changes to the muscles and nerves around the bladder may lead to incontinence-type accidents with dribbling or small puddles happening. Cognitive changes in elderly dogs (similar to human dementia) can also sometimes cause a pet to "forget" their training such as potty training, leading to accidents. It is a good idea to schedule a veterinary exam to see if any of these could be a possible cause and to find a treatment plan that helps.

We have a senior boxer, she is about 9 years old now. She is loosing bladder control, not just dribbles but walking and full on peeing like she doesn't even notice it. We are getting her diapers but are there any supplements or foods that can help
It could be that Shiloh is suffering for spay incontinence. This is due to weakening of the muscles of the urethra, and it can be treated medically. My dog chase is a 15 year old pug. Today he peed in the house twice which he nevet typically does and it smelled very bad. Im assuming its a UTI but he usnt acting like hes in pain. Could it be a different problem? Im afraid to bring him to the vet
I would strongly recommend taking Chase to the vet. It may be a urinary tract infection, or some other conditions such as bladder stones or prostate disease can cause abnormal urination as well. Some older dogs may also experience urinary incontinence. The veterinarian will perform a physical exam, then make suggestions on what testing or treatment they would recommend. No one can force you to euthanize him. It is very important in our older pets to get treatment as soon as a problem as noticed, to prevent that condition from becoming a life-threatening problem. With other pets, many veterinarians will recommend screening bloodwork and urinalysis just to assess overall health as well as get the most information about any current disease processes. It could be Willow is suffering from spay incontinence. Lack of estrogen may cause the urethral sphincter (a muscle used to control the exit of urine) to relax and release urine involuntarily. The good news is this can be treated medically if this is what is happening with her. I should have her seen by a vet for this problem. I hope this helps!
