My chihuahua puppy is constipated. Can I give a stool softener?

Can I give my 3.3 pound 6 month old chihuahua a 50mg capsule of stool softener?

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Gabbie. Unfortunately it's illegal for me to say if you can give her this stool softener or not. I simply cannot say it's safe without seeing her in person. Check with her vet and they can advise you if you can give it to her or not. Please do not give it to her without speaking to her, as you could accidentally harm her. Best of luck.

Unfortunately, by law it is illegal for the experts at Boop by Petco to prescribe any medication, including OTC drugs, without seeing the animal in person first. That's because doing so requires a veterinary client patient relationship which cannot be achieve via an internet forum. In addition, the experts cannot say for certain if a specific drug is safe for your dog. It sounds like your dog may be having diarrhea. This can be caused by GI illness, eating something rotten, a foreign body, a sudden change in diet, or intestinal parasites. You can try a home remedy first before having to take him into the vet. Withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. If the diarrhea continues on the bland diet, he starts vomiting food, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, he will need to see a ve

My dog had vaginal hyperplasia and it teceded on it's own but now she is not able to poop. Is it related and can I give her dulcolax?
Hello and welcome to Boop by Petco. The inability to poop is NOT related to the vaginal hyperplasia. It likely receeded due to the time in her cycle, as the hyperplasia is hormone responsive. I recommend getting her spayed. Dulcolax can be used in dogs, however the cause for her not being able to poop should be investigated and I recommend a visit to the vet. High fiber foods such as pumpkin (canned pumpkin, NOT pumpkin pie filling) can help as well. Best of luck with Chooe!

Thanks for using Boop by Petco! She may be showing signs of dietary indiscretion which can happen from eating something that does not sit well in the stomach. This is likely given the recent change in diet. Clinical symptoms that can occur include inappetence, vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal pain. Sometimes this resolves on its own. However, sometimes this does require some form of therapy which is mostly supportive in nature. Since she has now developed soft stools to diarrhea, it would be good to switch her back to her previous diet. If she will not eat it, consider a sensitive stomach type diet. If the stools continue to be soft or they progress to diarrhea, I recommend that you have her evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Good luck and have a great day!

Thanks for using Boop by Petco! Without seeing Gemma it is hard to say, but I would suspect diarrhea. I would not get her olive oil because you could make things worse. You didn't mention her age but I would be concerned about parasites, GI foreign bodies, parvovirus, or diarrhea from a diet change. If she continues to have diarrhea, starts vomiting, stops eating, or becomes lethargic, I would take her to a vet right away. They may need to check her stool for parasites, run a parvo test, or take radiographs of her abdomen. Good luck and kisses to Gemma!

Can I give my 70 pound Bernese Senekot for constipation. The vet gave her gábepentin and mirtrazipine. They are not sure what is wrong. She started eating but has not pooped in at least 3 days. First day eating on her own.

Unfortunately we cannot legally recommend giving her any drugs, including OTC drugs, without seeing her in person. We simply can't safe if it's safe or not. I do not recommend giving her any OTC drugs without speaking to her vet first. I'm not sure what tests you've had done, but I recommend an x-ray of her abdomen to see what could be causing this problem. Best of luck.

I have a 3 month old Chihuahua and last night she started having multiple soft stools, whining and is gassy. She's is still eating drinking and playing for the most part
As these episodes are commonly dietary related, I would recommend to start feeding with a bland diet based on boiled chicken and rice in small portion every 6 hours for the following 48hours. Then gradually reintroduce the normal diet over 5 days. I would definitively recommend a veterinary check up if the signs persist or you notice diarrhoea, vomiting, lethargy or inappetence. CoCo has been whining all day. She is eating but i have noticed that she haven't pooped at all today, but she did pee. Could she be constipated? If so, can i give her a laxative?
Thank you for using Boop by Petco! I’m sorry to hear that CoCo seems “off.” If you have not noticed her straining to pass stool, it is unlikely that she, as a young dog, is constipated. Most commonly whining will be due to pain/discomfort, stress, or boredom. Since she is eating and it doesn’t sound like she’s vomited, as long as her attitude seems normal (not dumpy) it is reasonable to give her some time and see how she is in the morning. However if she seems dumpy/lethargic, if she is limping noticeably or is not wanting to walk, or is having any vomiting, I would recommend you take her to a vet tonight. As far as a laxative, for future reference, hold off on giving any laxative until a vet has evaluated her and given specific instructions. A laxative could make another underlying problem worse due to its potential to cause dehydration. I hope you can both get some rest this evening! Thank you for using Boop by Petco!

Hello. You can feed Nicky a tablespoon of canned pumpkin ( not pie filling ) with each meal. Try & get her to take in more fluids too, by offering broths or soup stock in addition to fresh water. If Nicky refuses to eat, is straining constantly to have a bowel movement or vomiting, please have her seen as soon as possible. You could start giving her 2 tablespoons of canned pumpkin with her meals which may help with cases of mild constipation.
