My 18-week Boston puppy has strange poop. Is a toy the cause?

Hi there! I have a 18 week old Boston puppy. She recently has been having some strange looking stool (photos attached) and we wanted to know what we should do at this point. It’s been going on for two days. She recently swallowed a piece of a rubber toy but threw it up thankfully this morning. Would that be causing the strange stool? Her temperament, and energy levels are fine and she’s eating and drinking normally.

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Brooklyn and for providing pictures, they are very helpful! It looks like there is some mucus on her poop, which can be normal. The rest of her poop looks normal, and since everything else with her is as usual, I suspect it's just mucus which is nothing to be worried about. I hope this helps!

Hello, thank you for using Boop by Petco. There does appear to be a mucous coating on this stool. Typically that just means the stool was in the colon for a longer period of time. If this mucous persists for longer than 36 hours AND/OR she is acting sick, then you should take her to your vet of an exam. Be sure she is up to date on deworming. Intestinal parasites can also cause a mucous covering on the stool. If she is otherwise acting normally, you can try giving her a probiotic for a couple weeks to help normalize the bacterial population in her stool. I would recommend Fortiflora. She may end up with a bowel obstruction which could mean she would need surgery and it can be life threatening.

I noticed something strange in my dogs stool, don't know if he ate something or if this is a parasite. Sorry for the gross poop pictures. Just worried. He isn't showing any signs related with having worms but wanted to see what you think.
It's obviously hard to know for sure without being able to examine the stool but from the photos, that almost looks like cloth from a toy or something? I can't say for certain though that it's not a type of worm. If Buddy is in the habit of eating toys or other inedible objects, you should prevent this as they can cause an intestinal blockage (which may require surgery). If you still have the stool, you may drop it by your vets office to confirm what the origin is. You may also consider erring on the side of caution and have his stool checked for worms just to be safe. I hope this helps and please feel free to post any additional questions.

Is this a normal a presence of mucus? My dog as normal solid stools and never much mucus, but I found this today and that’s the first time I’ve seen that. Is this normal? Should I be concerned?
Thanks for using Boop by Petco! This is fine and nothing to be concerned about. There is always going to be some degree of mucus in the stools so as long as it does not turn into diarrhea, there is no need to necessarily be concerned about this. Good luck and have a great day!

9 week old puppy has blood and mucus in poo for the last couple of days. How should I approach this, should I be worried?
Thank you for contacting Boop by Petco with your question about Kaiya. Poor girl. Blood in the poop can be caused by intestinal worms, a stomach illness, sudden change in diet, eating something rotten, a foreign body, or a severe illness like parvo. Because poop in the poop can have some very serious causes and it's been going on for a few days, it's time to see the vet. The vet can diagnose what is causing it and can treat her. Hello and thank you for reaching out to Boop by Petco. Diarrhea is typically not a sign of an obstruction of the intestines. GI obstructions cause severe vomiting, lethargy, abdominal pain, and decreased appetite. It is possible that whatever toy Ben ate caused some irritation or trauma to the lining of his intestines/colon that is now manifesting as diarrhea. The diarrhea could also be unrelated to the toy, and could be due to eating any other type of new food, stress, or GI parasites. I recommend feeding Ben strictly his usual diet - no treats or other humans foods - for at least 5 days to see if this helps resolve his softer stools. I hope this is helpful!

Hello, thank you for using Boop by Petco. You are seeing some mucous on the stool. Mucous usually occurs when there is some inflammation in the colon. In a young dog, it could be parasites, something odd he ate, or it indicates a sensitivity to something like an allergen. If he is feeling well, eating normally, then I would not be too concerned. If he has not had a stool check done, I would definitely have it evaluated by your veterinarian. He may need to have his diet changed, but I would not just start buying different puppy foods. If you continue to see the mucous, please call your vet. Take care.

My Mia girl had a stool with shiny flecks that looked like glitter, and snot like substance on her stool. She hasn't gotten in to anything, and her diet is Ultamino dry food. I'm going to take in a sample, but what could it be?
Thanks for using Boop by Petco! While this could be parasites, this is likely some degree of colitis. You can add a probiotic to her diet such as Fortiflora. You can use it for 1-2 weeks to see if it makes a difference. If it does not, you can consider switching to a sensitive stomach type diet. If no improvement, have her evaluated by your veterinarian so that the stools can be assessed. If she develops diarrhea at any point before then at that point she should definitely be evaluated by her veterinarian. Good luck!

Grace is healthy with all her vaccine up-to-date, I had her dewormed a month ago, recently her poop is coated with mucus like substance, what does it mean? Is she unhealthy?
Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! Mucous in the stool indicates inflammation with in the colon. It can be from many reasons: intestinal parasites, viral or bacterial infection, she ate something gross outside, food allergy intolerance, or a reaction to a new food/treat or people food. One stool episode with mucous may be a one time thing. If it continues or she develops diarrhea bring a stool sample to your Vet and start a bland diet of boiled chicken or hamburger with rice. Feed 1 cup per 20 lbs per day until 2 normal stools. If that doesn't help then she should see your Vet for an exam and medications. I wish Grave the best!

Causes of diarrhea in a puppy are: intestinal parasites, viral or bacterial infections, dietary indiscretion, pancreatitis, toxin ingestion, reaction to a new treat/food.human food or an allergy to her current food. I would start a bland diet of boiled chicken or hamburger with rice. Feed 1 cup per 20 lb until 2 normal stools. You can also start a probiotic like Purina Fortiflora or Nutramax Proviable, I would also have her stool check for parasites. If she is not improved by mid next week she needs to be seen. Good luck!

My puppy l’s last two poops have had pink goo in them. It doesn’t look like blood and the goo is semi-solid in the sense that it doesn’t come apart when poked with a stick. He is acting normal and eating and drinking normally but I’m concerned
This could be an undigested item that he ingested and I wouldn't be too concerned if everything else is normal, the stool is solid and you don't continue to see this in his poop. I would continue to monitor his bowels. If you continue to see this in his poop then I would have your vet take a look at him. If you go in to see the vet, I would take in a fresh poop sample so that vet can see the material you are talking about and also look at it under the microscope to help rule out bacterial infections or parasites.
