What to do if you find a wild bunny with a broken leg? Can it heal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Small Animal | Rabbit | Female | 3 lbs

Hi, We have bunny with a compound fracture of the rear leg just above the knee joint. It's broken on an angle. The ligaments and tendons seem to be all attached. Is this repairable or will it be euthanized or amputated? It's a wild bunny that my dog trapped in my back yard but we are animal lovers and would like to help. It's very friendly.

Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. This kind of fracture in wildlife most likely is not be treatable. Nugget will have to have the leg amputated in the best case scenario. Please, take her to your local vets right away as this is an emergency.
