My dog came home sick, vomiting, losing weight. What's wrong?

She took off on me. About 2 weeks ago. When she came home she has done nothing but puke! After eating a large meal. She’s lost weight She is drinking She’s peeing And eating small amounts Was trying to see if it would change but it’s not getting any better

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Jazmine. I'm sorry she disappeared but am very glad for you that she's back. In the pictures, she does look quite skinny. I'm concerned she is sick or she could have been injured while she was missing causing the vomiting. The best thing to do for her is take into a vet immediately to get the cause of the vomiting diagnosed so she can be treated. I hope this helps!

Hello and welcome to Boop by Petco. It sounds like Joplin is very very sick. She might have a condition called "Parvovirus" which is a very serious virus that affects puppies, and is more likely if Joplin is unvaccinated. The other possible causes in a puppy include an obstruction in her gut (a blockage from a foreign object (ex. ball) that she ate, or an intussusception (the intestines telescoping in on each other). Also, depending on her age, pyometra is possible along with many other conditions. With what you are describing, I am very concerned that she could die without aggressive care. I strongly recommend you get Joplin to a vet right away, and if your vet is closed go to your closest emergency clinic. They will recommend a test of her poop, as well as possible bloodwork and x-rays, and will likely want to keep her in hospital on IV fluids and medications. Sounds like Strawberry may have become ill or injured while she was gone. It is always best to bring your dog to the vet ASAP after they've been lost for a while to check for any internal or external injuries or illnesses that could be making them sick.

My dog isnt eating or drinking at all and is super skinny. She just got skinny over night and i dont know what is going on with her. Do you think you could help me to figure out the problem?
Hello and welcome to Boop by Petco. Dogs that are not eating and drinking and look very thin and suddenly very thin are very sick. The biggest concern would be a 'foreign body'- a sock/underwear/toy that is stuck in the gut, preventing any food from being taken in and absorbed. Other concerns would be severe gastritis, a high worm burden (parasite infection), cancer in the gut, lack of enzyme production in the pancrease, and some other causes. I recommend getting your girl to a vet right away however, as it sounds like she is very sick. Best of luck with her!

Thanks for using Boop by Petco. All of these signs could simply be caused by the sudden change in food and the stress of a new home. I would wait 4 hours past the last episode of vomiting and feed her a little puppy food mixed with plain cooked white rice to help settle her stomach. Do this for a few days, slowly replacing more and more rice with puppy food. A little soft stool is OK as long as her attitude and appetite are great and it goes away within 3 days. Do not vaccinate her if there is any vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, or lack of appetite. If she vomits profusely (more than 4 times in an hour or 6 times in a day), or if she is lethargic, has diarrhea that is severe, or refuses to eat for more than 12 hours, she needs to see a vet IMMEDIATLEY for a parvo test and proper treatment regardless of cause. These little guys can get seriously ill very quickly from dehydration and low blood sugar, so early and aggressive treatment is warranted if signs become severe. Best wish

I highly recommend talking Cassie to a veterinarian. She needs a good physical examination and further diagnostics to determine what is going on with her. It may be just a mild gastrointestinal upset but with her losing weight, it is concerning. Thank you for using Boop by Petco.

My dog is throwing up and has lost a lot of weight and is still trying to eat and drink and there is no bloody stool
I recommend getting your pet in to be seen by your veterinarian right away. Continued vomiting and weight loss together are very concerning and can lead to dehydration and electrolyte imbalance as well as low blood sugar. He might have eaten something that either disagreed with him or something that has gotten stuck somewhere in his gastrointestinal tract. He could be sore from a hidden injury you are unaware of, he could have been exposed to some sort of toxin or irritant in his environment or this could be early signs of another condition or disease process. Your pet may need IV fluids to help support his/her system and to be fasted at the same time in order to give the gut a rest. Your vet can do an exam, blood work and possibly x-rays to determine the cause of the illness and suggest an effective treatment plan.

Weight loss, inappetence and decreased water intake are all signs of a possible gastrointestinal issue such as pancreatitis, dietary indiscretion, gastroenteritis, gastrointestinal foreign body ingestion and obstruction, infections, among others. These types of conditions can progress rather quickly which is why I recommend that you have Bella evaluated by a veterinarian as soon as possible for further assessment and treatment. Diagnostics that will likely recommended include bloodwork and abdominal imaging. At the very least they can prescribe medications to make her feel better. Hoping for a quick recovery! Good luck!

Based on what you are describing I would be concerned that Jessie was injured at one point when she ran off. Usually this is from a fight with another dog or from being hit by a car. I would recommend taking Jessie in to your vet to be examined. She may also need X-rays to rule out any fractures. Thank you for submitting your question regarding Daisy. She needs to see a veterinarian. There is typically a reason when a do begins to drink excessively. She will likely need to have blood and urine testing. She could have diabetes, kidney disease, liver disease or an adrenal gland disorder or even cancer. Possible causes for vomiting include dietary intolerance, dietary indiscretion, food allergy, intestinal parasites, GI blockage, gastroenteritis, bacterial or viral infection, IBD, pancreatitis, among others. In a young dog, intestinal blockage is at the top of my list. I recommend that Taylor get checked out by a vet as soon as possible. Weight loss can be caused by severe dehydration or other internal illness, but always indicates a serious problem that needs medical care.
