My dog ate cat food and has a round stomach. Is it safe to walk him?

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund (Miniature Smooth Haired) | Male | neutered | 10 years and 5 months old | 13 lbs

My mini dachshund, 10 years old, got into the dry cat food again. This time his stomach is very round due to the amount he ate. Do I have to do anything other than watch him? I will be taking my evening walk with him soon. Usually about 1 hour.

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Buster. I would avoid a long walk with him tonight. He’s eaten more food than he should and you don’t want him to bloat. I would take him out just long enough to potty, then bring him back in. He can resume his normal walks tomorrow. Other than that, just keep an eye on him. I hope this helps!

Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! It sounds like Minka is experiencing a simple food bloat (stomach is big and full of food). I recommend NOT feeding her until tomorrow, only small sips of water and walk her every 2-4 hours until bedtime. If she starts non-productively retching, appears restless or painful, pacing, won't lie down then she should go to the closest emergency room. If none of those things happen then she should be fine. If he stomach looks normal size tomorrow morning then resume her normal feeding schedule with her normal food. Good luck!

I took my dog for a very light walk after I fed her (10 minutes after we only walked for maybe a block she needed to bathroom and our yard is being re done) its been 2 hours and she seems okay but I'm concerned about bloat I read you're not supposed
Hi and thanks for using Boop by Petco! A light walk probably won't hurt but yes you are right about Bloat. It's very serious and any exercise after eating can be a problem. But it's usually vigorous activity like running, playing, fetching. Light walks should not be a problem and I don't see that as a big risk factor. Lots of owners do the same thing that you did. Also don't let her drink a big bowl of water around the time of vigorous activity. Small sips are ok but not huge gulps of water. So it's good to be careful and vigilant. The signs of Bloat include dry heaves (trying to vomit but nothing comes up), restlessness, not able to get comfortable, crying or moaning in discomfort, pacing, not wanting to lay down. I think you did the right thing walking her and I like the fact that you are aware of Bloat. Good job educating yourself on this important topic.

You He's a chiuhua and he's been eating a little bit of cat food I try to keep him out of it but last night I'm guessing he ate a bunch because his stomach is tensed up and I currently don't have a way to get him to a vet I'm praying he will be okay
Cat food tends to be higher in fat and calories than dog food and could cause an upset stomach. If Oreo ate enough cat food he could also have 'food bloat' where the stomach becomes distended with food and causes discomfort. If he is not vomiting and does not seem painful he may not require any veterinary care. If you think his stomach is distended with food frequent short walks could help everything move through his gastrointestinal tract. If he does begin vomiting, if he misses more than one meal, or if he becomes painful you will probably need to see a veterinarian.

Thank you for contacting Boop by Petco with your question about Alfie. Poor boy. It's good that he's acting normally, so it doesn't sound like he has bloat. I'd without food for tonight, and keep a close eye on him. If you see pacing, anxiety, restlessness, trying to vomit but can't, and excessive drooling, take him into an ER vet right away. Otherwise, feed him his normal breakfast in the morning. I hope this helps!

Hello. Is Rowan doing OK, active, bright & alert? If so, you can watch him as the food will very likely be digested. If, however, he is lethargic, miserable, moaning, develops vomiting &/or diarrhea, I would have him seen soon. Of course, I would probably withhold any food & treats for the next 12 hours, & do not let him gulp down water. If he drinks a reasonable amount, fine, but if he wants to just chug down a bowl, replace the water with ice cubes to lick on. Hopefully, he will be back to normal tomorrow. Sounds like he has "food bloat" - just a really full stomach and not the typical bloat you hear about where the stomach flips on itself. I suggest, since he is resting comfortably, the following: 1. Absolutely NO exercise for 24 hours. Only walk outside ON A LEASH to use the bathroom and then back inside. Dogs with full stomachs that run around have an increased chance of flipping the stomach and then it becomes the bad type of bloat! 2. No food for 24 hours but access to water is fine. 3. Monitor closely for any signs of distress (trying to vomit but nothing is coming up would be the main one) - if you notice that it is an emergency and he needs to see a vet ASAP. Hope this helps. Hi there and thank you for using Boop by Petco to address your concern. It sounds as though Scooby has a bit of food bloat. I would fast him for 24 hours and let him digest the donuts he ate. He may develop dietary indiscretion, pancreatitis, etc. If he begins to vomit and become lethargic, then I would take him in to be seen by a veterinarian so that the most appropriate treatments recommendations can be made. My 12 yr old golden retreiver mix got into a bowl of cat food when i wasnt home, im guessing she probably ate 1-2 cups of dry cat food, what should i do? Csn she die from this? Shes not acting any different i took her outside and she went to the bath
Oh no, that was naughty of Lady to eat the cat food. Certainly eating too much food can lead to bloat, but one to two cups isn't a lot of food to a large dog such as a Golden Retriever. You could see some stomach upset from it such as the diarrhea you have described, but she won't die from it. I can give you a home remedy to try to see if that helps her stomach. Withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet. I will also give you that symptoms of bloat just in case, but as I said, it's very unlikely that this amount of cat food will cause bloat. Signs of bloat include attempting to vomit but being unable to, enlarged abdomen, pacing, restlessness, looking at her stomach, labored breathing, and excessive drooling. If you see any of those signs, rush Lady into a vet immediately. Otherwise, she should be ok :-)

Oh Cooper! In my experience with food bloat it can take 24-48 hours to start feeling and maybe looking more normal. As long as he is not vomiting and seems to be continuing to improve I wouldn't be too worried. Also walking can help the GI tract move, so you might consider several 10-15 minute walks in the next several hours.

Thanks for using Boop by Petco! You can walk Junno frequently which can help in the digestion process. If he is showing any abdominal pain, he may need to be evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Sometimes they can benefit from being on fluids and pain control medications only in severe cases. Best of luck!
