My dog's bottom looks injured after a leash yank. Does he need a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 2 years and 2 months old | 26 lbs

Should I bring my dog in for an examination of his bottom? He ran full force at another dog on a walk this afternoon, but he was on a leash and in a harness so he got yanked back and slid across the ground. it doesn’t seem to bother him even when he poops, but it looks bad.

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Winston. Thank you also for providing a picture, its very helpful. I agree, it does look bad and I do think you should take him into a vet to get this checked out and treated. I'd take him into tonight if possible; otherwise, have him seen in the morning. I hope this helps!
