I need help with my 12 year old yorkie-chihuahua mix. He was scooting this morning when he went out to go potty and he couldn't make a bowel movement. When I caught him doing it again I took a look at his bottom. His anus is quite pink and it looks swollen/inflamed. There is some sort of clear/fatty looking substance around it. I'm not sure what it is but I don't think its worms because I didn't see anything of the sort. I'm not sure what to give him to help.

Hello. There can be a couple of things that might be bothering Sonny. Impacted, inflamed anal glands are a primary problem. Allergies can affect the delicate mucous membranes of the rectum, & more seriously, cancer. You can try sitting his bottom in a warm bath containing Epsom salts & a good shot of povidone-iodine for 5-10 minutes. Repeat twice daily for a few days. In an older pet, it is best to have this looked at if things do not improve on their own. Thanks for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Sonny. Poor boy. It could be he has a problem with his anal sacs. They could be impacted and infected, and they may be so swollen that he cannot pass poop. Without seeing him in person, I cannot say for sure what is going on. I'd take him into a vet immediately to get this diagnosed and treated. Best of luck.
