My dog has a red, crusty, itchy spot on her ear. Should I see a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | French Bulldog | Female | spayed | 2 years and 8 months old | 24 lbs

My dog has this red spot that gets crusty on her ear. I just found it today and it seems to be itchy, but not bothering her constantly. What can I do to help? Do I need to go to the vet?

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Milli Rock. It could be she has an ear infection causing the redness and crusting spot. It would also cause her to itch her ear. Ear infections in dogs can be caused by ear mites, yeast, or bacteria. She does need to see a vet to have this diagnosed and treated. Leaving this untreated can lead to hearing loss. Give her vet a call to make her an appointment. I hope this helps!

Poor Alaska. She sounds like she may have an ear infection. Dogs common get yeast and/or bacterial infections. Also, younger dogs are prone to ear mites. I would see your vet for an exam. Your vet will be able do a cytology if needed and start her on the appropriate medications. I hope this helps!
