My dog suddenly stops and stiffens on walks. Could it be seizures?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 11 years and 11 months old | 53 lbs

During our walk today Maverick suddenly stopped a few times. In my previous question I said he crouched briefly, but it is more like he suddenly halted and stiffened. I heard his nails screech to a stop and his toes splayed briefly. It happened a few times. But by the end of the walk he was chipper and ready to eat. Could these have been mini seizures? I gave him nexgard spectra for the first time three weeks ago. But if that was the issue, would it have caused it right after administering?

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Maverick. I do not think it's mini seizures, it doesn't sound like it from your description. And you are right, if the Nexgard was going to cause problems, it would have happened by now. I'm wondering if he's in pain during the walking, causing the stopping. He is an older dog, and arthritis can be common in senior dogs. It could also be he heard something that scared him. I'd keep an eye on him for now and if this behavior keeps happening, try to record a video of it on your phone. Then take him into the vet, and show the vet the video to help them diagnose what is causing this, I hope this helps!
