My dog had a dead tick. Should I worry about disease symptoms?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 5 years old | 50 lbs

Found a lone star tick on my dog. Because we live in a rural area, our dogs are vacinated for Lyme and Lepto. They also have Seresto collars. The tick was dead when I found it and was able to easily remove it with the head in tact. Are there any symptoms I should be on the look out for? I know the lone star ticks can carry a bunch of disease. She is tired, but we spent 3 hours outside this morning doing chores, so I’m counting her tiredness to that. She is normal outside of being a bit tired.

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Bree. Good on you for making sure that she is protected from ticks. Given that the tick is not engorged, it did not feed her on, so no disease would have been transmitted. The tick needs to bite and feed to pass along disease into her bloodstream. I imagine she is quite tired from her busy day. To be safe, watch for continued lethargy, limping, joint swelling, and a loss of appetite. I hope this helps!
