My dog has a raw spot on his butt from chewing. Can I use bacitracin?

My parent’s dog has a raw spot on his butt. I think he was chewing it. We are wondering if we can maybe clean it with something. Can we put bacitracin on it?

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Mozzie and providing pictures. They are very helpful. I'm concerned he could have a hot spot, which is an inflammatory skin lesion. In this case, I do think it's best he sees a vet to have this treated, as if this is a hot spot, a steroid cream can be helpful in resolving it. I would give his vet a call now to make him an appointment. I hope this helps!

Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! Poor Joey! Thanks for the pictures! It looks like a hot spot which is a superficial skin infection. They pop up and spread quickly. They are raw and tend to be painful to the touch. I do recommend a vet take care of this. I shave all the hair off the area, clean it and send the owner home with oral antibiotics, a steroid taper or apoquel and a medicated spray. The area usually heals in 5-7 days with that plan. I wouldn't bathe him and I would take him to the Vet Monday. If you have clippers and he will let you, you can shave the fur away and clean it. I wish you the best!

Thanks for visiting Boop by Petco. The picture is a bit blurry but the area appears to be a possible hot spot. Hot spots are usually caused by nicks in the skin that has become infected. This can be caused by fleas or any type of trauma to the skin. Treatment typically consists of clipping the hair (because it carries bacteria), cleaning the skin with an antiseptic (Betadine diluted 50:50 with water or Chlorhexidine 3% diluted with water), and then topical antibiotic spray. Sometimes oral antibiotics are also needed. Your local pet store should have a hot spot spray available over the counter that you can try. If the over the counter spray doesn't improve things in a few days then a vet visit will be needed for stronger medicaitons and potentially oral antibiotics as wel. My friend dog has a red, raw spot. We shaved her hair short and have web bathing her with Veternery clinical shampoo antiseptic anrifungal shampoo. She is taking 2 baths a week. Is there something else we should do? We also put an Advantiz treatment

Hi there, and thanks for using Boop by Petco! It sounds like Blaze has what we call a "hot spot". This happens when dogs focus on a small area and begin licking and scratching it until an infection develops. This infection in turn is very itchy, which perpetuates the cycle. The best thing to do first is stop him from itching the area. This can usually be accomplished with a cone collar, a t-shirt or bandage (depending on where it is). Many times these infections require antibiotics to clear up. And of course, we need to determine why he started itching that area in the first place. He may have some underlying allergies. Your local veterinarian can work with you to manage the problem and hopefully prevent it from recurring in the future.

Hello, thank you for using Boop by Petco. I actually do think that it looks like a hot spot but honestly, I have never seen one in that location. A hot spot is really just a skin infection so it is certainly possible especially if he was scraped in that general location. I would not be overly concerned about it as it looks superficial. You can continue with the Neosporin but I think this would be better: ( https://www.petco.com/shop/en/petcostore/product/3-oz-3-fl-oz-hot-spot-antimicr-2877113 ) Also, if he is licking that area you need to get him a cone collar to wear. Licking can cause more infection and will delay healing. Hello. It looks like Tyson has a nasty hot spot. This is a moist bacterial infection. They are usually sticky and sometimes smelly. They can get pretty big pretty quickly. Once Tyson gets to the veterinarian, they will likely want to shave the hair away from the area and wash it thoroughly with an antibacterial wash. These spots are often treated with a combination of drugs including a prescription antibiotic, an anti itch medication and often a topical spray to help dry it up and reduce the itch. It looks like the skin in this area has become infected. It could have started as a simple wound, like you said, and then progressively became infected. To help the area heal, keep the wound clean and dry. Wash it 2x a day with a gentle antibacterial soap. You can apply some triple antibiotic ointment to it as well. You will need to keep Boomer from licking the area as best as you can. The best way to do this is by placing an E-collar on him. If this does not help the area heal in 3-5 days or if the area around the wound is swollen at all, I would recommend taking Boomer to the vet to have it evaluated. He may need oral antibiotics to get it cleared up. I hope this helps. Thanks for using Boop by Petco. Best of luck.

Hi and thanks for using Boop by Petco! Sorry to hear about Mac. Several possibilities exist for this from the picture. This could be a hot spot or what we call acute moist dermatitis or it could be an abscess/cellulitis from an infection. I would advise letting your vet take a look at this and collect a thorough history. They can advise treatment and diagnostics based on a thorough exam of the area. Most likely they will advise shaving the hair from the area (may require sedation as these areas are raw and painful), a good antibacterial cleaning of the area, and then a sound treatment plan. An E collar will be advised to prevent further licking of the skin. Hot spots develop when an intense itch develops from an insect or parasite bite, a bacterial infection, allergies, etc. The dog constantly licks the site breaking down the skin barrier. The surface bacteria and bacteria on the hair contaminate the wound. The itch intensifies with the infection and until the cycle is broke

Hi there and thank you for using Boop by Petco! Based on the picture, it does appear that this could be a hot spot. I typically recommend using products that soothe and treat infection. What I would recommend would be Well & Good Hydrocortisone spray (at Petco) and Miconahex + Triz spray and apply both of these twice daily until resolved. If there is no improvement within 7 days, I would recommend taking your dog in to be seen by a veterinarian so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. My dog has an exposed patch of skin looks like a scab but not sure what it is. I noticed it yesterday was much smaller and this morning its 4 times bigger. What could this be? I attached pictures.
Poor pup. This looks like a hot spot. This is a superficial bacterial infection that is initially caused by some kind of trauma/injury to the skin that then gets infected. You will need to have this area shaved by your vet and then get Biscuit on antiboitics to get this to heal. I would recommend scheduling an appt with your vet soon to have this taken care of. Until you can get Biscuit seen, you can certainly clean this area with Betadine diluted 50:50 with water to help reduce the bacterial load there and keep the infection down until he can get seen by your vet.
