Dog sprayed by skunk, eyes red. What emergency care is needed?

Pet's info: Dog | Blue Heeler | Female | spayed | 25 lbs

My blue healer got sprayed by a skunk about 30 minutes ago. I think she got sprayed on her face because her eyes are bright red. I’ve already rinsed them out multiple times. What else can I do to help her?

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Ella. Poor girl, that's awful. I also suspect she was sprayed in the face if her eyes are bright red. Getting sprayed in the eyes by a skunk is akin to getting sprayed in the eyes with tear gas. This requires immediately veterinary care. Please take her into an ER vet clinic; if there isn't one in your area, there will be a vet on call for emergencies. The information to reach that vet is found on a clinic's answering machine or website. I hope this helps!

There should be no ill effects apart from the smell :) The only problems we will usually see from skunk spraying is irritation of the eyes if they get sprayed in the eyes - so if you notice any squinting of the eyes you should wash them out through this eye wash and/or eye gel. You may be able to purchase these at your local Petco. If not, you can buy online. My dog got sprayed in the eyes by a sound a few days ago. She had one eye open but now both eyes are swollen and closed. I can't get the vet as of right now. What can I do to ease the swelling and itching. Please help
I'm sorry Spot is so uncomfortable. I assume you meant she was sprayed by a skunk? She should see a veterinarian to make sure there is no ulceration or damage to the eyes, but in the meantime you can flush the eyes with an isotonic eye saline rinse that you can purchase at almost any over the counter pharmacy. Also cool water compresses applied to the closed eyes may make her more comfortable. I hope this helps!

Hi so my dog got into some kind of cleaning supply not sure what. She keeps shutting her eyes- I rinsed her face with water and gave her a bath- I’m concerned and hoping there’s something I can go at home to help he and make sure she’s ok
Hello and thank you for reaching out to Boop by Petco. I'm sorry to hear that your pet may have gotten into something. Since she is keeping her eyes shut, I am worried that she has injuries to her corneas, or the front part of the eye. Cleaning solutions can be toxic to the cells of the cornea and cause ulceration, which is very painful. I recommend bringing her to your veterinarian as soon as you can have her seen to have her eyes examined. Your vet may prescribe pain medications as well as topical eye antibiotics to reduce the risk of infection and permanent damage to the eyes. In the meantime, you can try to keep rinsing her eyes with eye wash that you can purchase over the counter from a human pharmacy. I hope this is helpful!

What did my dog get sprayed with that wasn’t a skunk? Horrible chemical smell. He couldn’t open his eyes. We live in the county with a fenced in yard.
I am afraid, without actually smelling your dog, I could not tell you. However you should give your dog a bath and see whether you can wash off whatever he was sprayed with. This still may have been a skunk. If your dog still cannot open his eyes, he will have to be seen by a veterinarian after being washed, preferably this morning.

What do I need to do? I think she got stung. I'm not sure. Please help
The white part of the eye (sclera) is extremely red. It does not look like a sting, it looks like trauma. You need to get her to the vet ASAP or she may lose her eye. This is very painful and she needs assistance right away. Take her to your local ER vet clinic.

What is in my dogs eye and what can I do to fix it
Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! Oh goodness! Poor Paris! Sadly Paris needs to see a Vet for her eye. A painful red eye needs immediate Veterinary care. Possible causes are: a corneal ulcer, infection, allergies, trauma, inflammation or glaucoma. There are specific medications that are safe for the eye and she needs a diagnosis first. My grandmothers dog ,Tina has a red irritated eye she squints ,will rub it with her paw and has the occasional green book from her right eye we used some puffer type powder for eye infections in dogs seemed to be looking better but today she can't/ w
Thanks for using Boop by Petco! I am afraid that going to a veterinarian is the best and only option. This cannot be treated at home without knowing what it is. This could be due to an eye injury or conditions such as a corneal laceration, corneal ulcer, conjunctivitis, dry eye (also known as KCS), among many other conditions. I highly recommend that you have Tina evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Further therapy would be based on the findings. Good luck and best wishes!

My dog has a red eyelid
Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! Thanks for the picture of Aria it helps. The redness could be from allergies or an allergic reaction. I recommend that you take her to the Vet tomorrow. After their evaluation they will likely prescribe steroids and possibly an antihistamine. If she gets worse have her seen today in emergency. Good luck!

She has this red gunck coming out of her eye and it will not go away what do I need to do?
You need to take Dutches into a vet immediately, as it sounds like there is blood in the discharge from her eyes. Any problem with the eyes is considered an emergency because it's such a delicate and important structure. Leaving it untreated can lead to vision loss. She could have injured her eye or may be suffering from a severe eye infection. The vet can diagnose the cause of her eye symptoms so it can be treated. I would take her into an ER vet or find a vet on call to see her now.

Can u please help me try to figure out what is going on with my puppy's eyes
Thanks for using Boop by Petco! The redness could be due to irritation or allergy. If anyone is smoking anything in the house, burning incense, or spraying air freshesners, those could be to blame. It could also be related environmental allergies. Try just a regular saline drop (Blinks, Refresh contacts drops). 1-2 drops per eye every 8-12 hours. If she is squinting or the surface of the eye is cloudy it could be an ulcer or laceration. That will need a vet visit as soon as possible. Best of luck to you and Jewel!
