What's on my dog's paw? Is it a torn pad, wart, or serious injury?

Hello! My dog sometimes bites at her nails.. I know.. odd. So lately I’ve noticed her doing to her back left leg and tonight I looked at it further and found this on her paw.. is her paw torn or is that from a wart? I will call her vet tomorrow to make an apt. But wanted thoughts on this and if life threatening.

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Charlie, and thanks for providing a picture. It's very helpful! That could be her pad has torn, and that would be my best guess from the picture given it's the exact same color as the rest of the bad. It may be she injured herself, and that is a flap of the pad sticking up. It won't be life threatening, but it should get checked out by a vet. Tonight, put a cone on her to keep her from licking the area. You can make one at home or buy one at a pet store. I hope this helps!

Hi there and thank you for using Boop by Petco to address your concern. This does not require stitches in my opinion. The spot at the top of the picture appears to be a cut or abrasion. The protruding pieces are likely pieces of pad that have not fallen off on their own. I would recommend soaking this in a betadine / saline mixture (mixed to give a light brown solution). I would soak this for 5-10 minutes twice daily until healed. I would also apply Sentry Wound ointment, which you can find at PetCo and apply twice daily. If this does not improve or it worsens, please have Bane examined by a veterinarian so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. I was just playing fetch with my dog outside on a dirt area. It looks like the middle part of his paw pad started peeling off. It doesn’t seem to bother him much, if at all.
Thank you for contacting Boop by Petco with your question about your dog. Thank you also for providing the pictures, they are very helpful. That has really peeled back, and likely will need to be removed. I would not try to remove it yourself, it could hurt him and he may bite in pain. I'd take him into a vet now to get this part of his pad removed, to get pain medication, and to get antibiotics. I hope this helps!

Buddy was limping and I found a pussy knot just off the pad of his paw.

It is difficult to make out exactly what this is based on the pictures, but it appears to be an ulcerated sore that has opened up on the paw pad. I would recommend having this looked at by your veterinarian so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. This sore could be a mass or an infected wound. My dog has a sore on her front paw no fur on it size of a 20 pence
Thanks for using Boop by Petco! It is difficult to know without being able to examine her. This could be a benign or malignant growth. There is no way of knowing what it is just based on its appearance. This is often differentiated by a test called a fine needle aspirate (FNA) which is a pain free, inexpensive and easy procedure which in most cases will help reach a diagnosis. Sometimes a biopsy is needed for a definitive diagnosis. I recommend that you have her evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. I am really hoping for something benign. Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! Poor Bella! Based on your pictures that isn't a growth but a paw pad abrasion. I see it when the dog runs too much on asphalt or tennis courts chasing balls and skidding. I have seen multiple feet and multiple pads affected and peel like blisters. They heal quickly by preventing licking with an E-collar, soaking in Epsom salts, oral antibiotics and anti-inflammatories. I wish you and Bella the best!

I think you are doing a great job, and I don't see a need to take her to the vet. I'd put a cone on her and monitor the area for signs of infection which include redness, swelling, warmth to the touch, and pus. If you do see signs of infection, I'd take her into the vet. My dog cut he pad on her paw but theres been no blood what should i do ?? She still applies pressure on it but only limps slightly
Hello, and thanks for your question. It's difficult to tell in the picture where the injury is. I'm possibly seeing a small area with minor irritation on the edge of the metacarpal pad (the larger pad behind the toe pads), almost like a rug-burn type injury... If that's the case, it will be a bit sore until the tissue starts to heal, but there isn't much to do other than monitor for infection and protect it from further injury. You can apply a topical ointment such as neosporin, and sometimes they're more comfortable if you apply a sock or bootie when Blitz goes outside. Avoid long walks and running off leash for a week or so, especially on abrasive surfaces such as concrete or gravel. Monitor for redness, swelling, or discharge that might indicate infection. If you see any of these, or if Blitz seems uncomfortable enough to need pain medication, then it's best to bring her in to the vet. Of course, if there's further injury besides the suspected "rugburn" or scrape I described

Hello and thank you for contacting Boop by Petco. It is very hard to say what the growth is without seeing and examining Tonny. It does not really look like a healed part of the stopper pad, so it could be a skin growth. If Tonny keeps licking the area you definitely should take him to your local vets for an appointment. For now, please use a head cone or bandage up the leg for 24hrs to stop him from nibbling on the leg as this could introduce skin inflammation and infection.
