Is overfeeding my pregnant dog with meat and cat food harmful?

Hello, I want to give my dogs the best diet possible...but i feel sometimes that i’m doing it too much, especially when they pregnant. I give them so much beef pork chicken, cat canned food...and they eat so much (i give them more when they pregnant and nursing). I wonder if this will improve their overall health and also the baby (if pregnant) or harm them, Thanks.

Too much food is harmful, as it leads to obesity. Plus if a food is fatty, it can cause pancreatitis. The best thing to give a dog is an adult dog kibble like Royal Canin, Hill's Science Diet, Purina Pro Plan, and Iams. When the dog is pregnant or nursing, feed a puppy food for the extra calories, calcium, and protein. I hope this helps!

Great question! A more energy dense food is appropriate for a pregnant dog, such as puppy food, but you will need to take her off the puppy food by last 10-14 days of her pregnancy. Calcium rich foods need to be stopped then, and she should be fed an adult dog food. If she is gaining weight during the pregnancy and is healthy, then an adult dog food is fine to feed her for the entire pregnancy. No, this is not good for her to eat. She needs to be eating her dog food because it's formulated for her nutritional needs. I'd make an immediate appointment with her vet to discuss getting her to eat her food, as she needs to eat for the health of her puppies. There could be a medical issue causing her to not eat that has to be treated now. Best of luck.

It is important that she take in adequate amounts of energy, calcium and other vitamins and minerals. I don't normally recommend giving pregnant females any kind of extra calcium supplementation during pregnancy, since there is evidence to show that this can actually increase their risk of post-birth complications such as eclampsia. Instead, feed her a high-quality puppy food such as Royal Canin or Purina Pro Plan during her pregnancy and while she is nursing her puppies - puppy food has a higher calorie content than normal adult dog food, and will meet all of the mother's nutritional needs during this time without the need for any additional supplements.

Well that is quite simple actually. Pregnant dogs only require puppy food which is higher in calories and provides exactly what she needs to maintain a good milk supply and muscle mass during her last trimester. You should start about halfway through her pregnancy and continue this food daily until she has completely weaned her puppies (at 3-4 weeks of age). You don't really need a daily food chart, just feed her the normal amount of food that you would feed her on a regular basis an she should be just fine. It is also a good idea to get her examined around day 45 by a veterinarian to find out how many pups she is having (via x-ray) and also for a general health exam to make sure mama is in good medical condition for her upcoming labor. Hi there and thanks for your post. Pregnant females should be eating a diet high in vitamins and minerals as well as higher in calories. I would recommend a good quality commercial puppy food for Nancy as puppy diets have extra calcium and calories they need to maintain a healthy pregnancy and produce healthy pups. Unfortunately, I cannot legally prescribe diets over the internet. Please discontinue the fried chicken and fish diet as eating these foods alone is not food for pregnant dogs or dogs in general and yes, oily food is not good for dogs as they are high in fat and low in nutritional value. Great question! It's recommended to feed pregnant mother cats a good quality kitten food during their entire pregnancy and while they are nursing - this is because they are using far more calories during this time then they normally would, and kitten food is higher in calories than a normal adult maintenance diet. She should have free access to food so that she can eat as much as she wants to, whenever she's hungry. Beyond that, it's actually not recommended to give any kind of additional supplements, calcium, etc. as this can throw off the balance of her diet and may make her more prone to medical issues like eclampsia (milk fever) after the kittens are born. So I would feed a good quality kitten food, and do everything else the same as usual :) I hope her pregnancy goes well this time!

Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! I recommend starting pregnant mothers on puppy food. Commercial puppy food will provide all the nutrients, vitamins and appropriate calories she needs. I do not recommend raw or home cooked diets as they are deficient in the appropriate nutrients unless balanced by a nutritionist. This is not a good idea. Chicken and steak will not be a balanced diet for your dog and the puppies may not develop properly. Try feeding her some good quality puppy food, warm it up in the microwave, canned puppy food may be even better. If she does not eat it, do NOT feed her the chicken and steak as she will then wait always until you feed her that kind of food. It is not a problem if she does not eat for a day, but the next day she will likely be hungry enough to eat the puppy food. Now is the time when the puppies grow exponentially and therefore it is very important to feed her proper dog, best, puppy food.

At this point in her pregnancy, you should feed her kitten food. If she does turn out to not be pregnant, it will not hurt her to feed the kitten food right now. You will feed her this diet until the kittens are weaned and no longer dependent upon her for milk. The dry cat food is just fine for her. Do not give her anything like milk as this may upset her stomach. You should also talk to your veterinarian about deworming her for parasites. Some dewormers are safe to use in pregnancy and others are not so you will want to check what you have available with your local products. Please feel free to post any additional questions.
