Why is my older dog's belly swollen and he's panting more suddenly?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | neutered | 9 years and 9 months old | 19 lbs

My dogs belly is normally large and firm, but I’ve noticed it was much larger than normal yesterday and today. He is not exhibiting any odd behaviors, and it doesn’t seem to be sensitive. The only other thing I’ve noticed is a slight increase in panting.

I see that Tyga is an older dog. I'm concerned this belly swelling could be due to something serious like heart disease. Certainly heart disease could affect his breathing causing panting, and this disease can be common in older dogs. I'd have him seen by a vet in the morning for this. I hope this helps!
