My small dog ate Vetmedin. Is this heart medication safe for her?

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Harper. The dose she ate is actually below what the recommended dose would be for a dog her weight, so there is no risk of overdose. This single, low dose should not be a problem. Just don't let her get any more. I hope this helps!

Hello and thank you very much for your question. Your dog is so very lucky to have such concerned and caring parents. Vetmedin is administered at a dosage of 0.5 mg per kilogram of body weight. A kilogram is equal to 2.2 pounds. If I am reading your question correctly, you both gave 1.25 mg to your dog this morning. That is the total daily dose recommended for a dog your size. Even though the dosage should be divided into two doses given approximately 12 hours apart, it is absolutely fine in this situation that the entire daily dosage was given once. So, no, you have no reason to be concerned with what happened this morning. Your dog should be absolutely fine. Please do not give any doses for the rest of the day and tomorrow morning, go back to your regular 1/2 tablet every 12 hours dosing schedule. I hope I have given you the information you needed. By mistake, I swollowed a 5mg Vetmedin caps which I give to my dog for heart problems. Am I in danger Am a 68 yr old man
The active ingredient of Vetmedin is Pimobendan. This is a medication that is also used in humans, therefore I suggest you call a human poison control or your doctor or a hospital to find out what to expect and whether the dosage is harmless or not. From articles I found the normal human dose is 2.5 mg, so 5mg is double and I strongly suggest your consult with a doctor. We are veterinary doctors and not qualified to assess this. Please call your nearest hospital.

What's the lowest weight a dog can be on the 1.25 mg of vetmedin. At what weight would the dosage have to be lowered? My dog is 10 pounds and dropping due to pancreatitis most likely but is still on the 1.25 mg of vetmedin.
Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! The dose of Vetmedin is 0.25mg/kg twice daily. So for a 10 lb dog I would prescribe the 1.25mg tablet to give every 12 hours. I would go to 1/2 of a 1.25 mg twice daily around 6-7 lbs. I hope this helps!

HI, thanks for using Boop by Petco! I would need to know the milligrams (mg), how many tablets of each and how often he receives the medications to be 100% sure. But he likely will be fine! If he receives any of these medications twice daily just skip tonight's dose. Even if they are just once a day medications he will likely be fine. Call your Vet tomorrow to discuss it with them. hi there i have a little dog , a poodle, Hwal. she is diagnosed CHF last year , has been fed 0.3mg bid vetmedin as her vet prescribed. but as starting taking medicine, her heart has been enlarging. is it possible overdose vetmedin makes her heart
Vetmedin does not increase the heart size. Since I don't know how much your dog weighs I cannot comment on the dose. If you would like to post again with her weight then we can maybe help you determine if that is an overdose. You can always talk to your vet about changing the medication - I would not change anything without speaking to them first. Is she taking any other medications for CHF like furosemide or enalapril? If so, the enalapril is most likely causing the increase in heart rate after administration. None of the medications however, will cause the hear to enlarge. The heart is enlarging due to the normal course of the disease. The medications only help to support the heart - they will not stop the progression of the disease. Hope this helps. Best wishes.

My 13mo old 10 lb. shorkie just ate 6 tablets of Tri-Heart Plus for dogs up to 25 lbs.I haven't been able to locate a vet that is open this time of n.
You did exactly the right thing by calling around to vets to ask for help right away. It's always best to check when you aren't sure, and are worried about your pet. The Triheart dose that we give dogs for heart worms has very small doses of the two medications that are in it. Ivermectin is one of the medications that is in the Tri heart. The dose is 68 micrograms. Veterinarians use this medication also to treat dogs with skin mites and use a dose over 100 times the dose in one heart worm preventive tablet. Therefore, even if she would have eaten two or three boxes of the Triheart she should be very safe and there is not any risk of an overdose of the ivermectin. The other medication is called pyrantel pamoate which is used for deworming of intestinal parasites. This medication has a very large safety margin also, and can be given at 10-20 times the normal dose without any risks of toxicity. Therefore, just like with the ivermectin in the Triheart Plus, I would not expect any potential

My pet weighs 12lbs and takes gabapentin, rimadyl, and now prescribed vetmendin. He is prescribed 1.25 mg twice per day is this correct for his weight? Can this drug cause fluid in the lungs and abdomen or upset his pancreatitis?
That is a proper dose of Vetmedin, yes. This drug is used to improve heart function and will not cause fluid in the lungs or abdomen, however, congestive heart failure will cause fluid in the lungs or abdomen. If there is concern that he is in congestive heart failure, additional medication-- Lasix (also called furosemide) would be needed, which is a diuretic medication. Vetmedin is safe to give with gabapentin and Rimadyl. It will not cause pancreatitis. Thank you for asking Boop by Petco!

My dog took another dogs pill pocket with 10 mg Vetoryl, 1/2 apoquel and 1/2 of 0.2 mg thyroid supplement in it. Do I need to contact my vet?

In the future if you have an emergent question (especially pertaining to possible medication toxicity) it is best to call your local ER vet as we are not an emergency service and cannot guarantee an immediate response. Your dog should be just fine having eaten those medications. The apoquel and thyroid medication doses are not worrisome at all. The normal Vetoryl dosing for dogs is 1-3mg/pound so at 12 pounds, a 10mg tablet should not be a problem. Hope this helps. Best wishes.

Hello. I would not be concerned. All of these prodcts have been rigourously tested & significant overdoses are a routine part of this testing. Often, 5x the regular dose will be given for weeks & no adverse effects are noted. So a small onetime overdose that your little schnauzer got will not bother her one bit. I dropped a 5 mg enalapril on the floor at 12:00PM today and my dog ate it before I could stop him. It is now 5:30PM and he has been fine all day, should I be concerned?
Hello. 5 mg was a very small dose of enalapril ( which we do use regularly in dogs ) for a dog that weighs 55 pounds. Abby will be perfectly fine & you have nothing to worry about. Thanks for using Boop by Petco.
