Dog licking everything after heartworm pill: Is it a side effect?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 50 lbs

Maisie was given a heartworm pill earlier today(about 5 hours ago) and she is obsessively licking EVERYTHING. I’ve never seen her like this. Licking her pet bed, the walls, the ground, her lips, etc. Otherwise she seems ok. Is this a side effect?

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Maisie. It may be she is feeling nauseous. Nausea can be a side effect. I'd keep an eye on her for now. If this behavior doesn't subside in 24 hours, then I'd have her checked out by a vet to be safe. I hope this helps!

Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. I would recommend bringing a fecal sample in to your vet to check for intestinal parasites. Even though she has been dewormed, the dewormer used may not have treated all intestinal parasites. This may also be a behavioral problem and an obsessive behavior. Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! Poor Lucy! I always recommend the first time giving nexgard and heartgard to separate them out by 2 days in case there is a reaction we know which drug it could be. Both have the potential to cause an upset stomach. Also having intestinal parasites can cause vomiting and diarrhea. The heatgard kills round worms so that could be why Lucy passed the worm after you gave the medication. Sadly both are possible causes for her upset stomach. Usually all quickly resolve. Just watch her closely for the next several hours. If she continues to vomit or won't eat this morning I would call your Vet when they open this morning and have her seen before they close for the weekend. Good luck!

I gave lucy her deworming pill today 5 hours ago.she went to sleep after that and now when she walks I think she is somehow unbalanced and maybe dizzy cause she doesn't walk quite right.can something like this be caused by this pill?
That is not a typical side effect of a deworming treatment, and I would be concerned that something else is causing Lucy to behave this way such as an illness or injury. Keep a close eye on her for now. If this behavior continues over the next 30-60 minutes, gets worse, or she develops other signs such as disorientation, confusion, vomiting, or severe lethargy, take her into a vet right away. No, that does not sound normal. At regular/normal dosing Milbemycin is pretty safe and side effects are pretty rare. What you are describing does not sound spot on with side effects for this drug. Side effects are usually neurological. I suggest you get a second opinion from another vet. As I was told the obsessively licking that Bella is doing is a sign of nausea .. Is this seirous ?! What can I do ?! Should I bring her to the vet to get checked ?? Im so worried :\ its been going on for 3 days ,. I just don't know what to do... She
Chronic licking is a common sign of nausea, as well as hypersalivation. Nausea can be caused by many conditions such as dietary indiscretion (eating things Bella shouldn't be), intestinal parasites, foreign bodies, and pancreatitis. If Bella is consistently doing this, it is worth it to rule out the conditions above. Your vet may recommend bloodwork, x-rays, and possibly an abdominal ultrasound. Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! I have seen deworming pills cause an upset tummy: vomit, diarrhea, decreased appetite. It usually resolves in 1-2 days. The pill may not be the cause of why Lucy isn't acting normal. If it has been 2 days since you gave the pill I would have Lucy seen by your Vet to make sure she is ok. Gave my dog her first ever heartworm and flea meds yesterday. All of a sudden today she threw up and is shivering and won't play or do anything
Depending on the type of heart worm preventative you gave, it can cause upset tummy like vomiting and even diarrhea. Next time I would recommend to make sure she has had a full meal prior to giving the medicine or you can change to a different medicine all together. Finally, if she isn't improved by tomorrow I would contact your vet for an exam and make sure she doesn't need any fluids or anti-nausea medicine. I hope this helps.

Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! He could be reacting to that brand of heartworm medication. If he was normal before then it is likely. I would discuss with your Vet trying a different brand. Consider purchasing only 1 month at a time until you know he can tolerate it. Try not to give any other medications on that day. I would start a bland diet of boiled chicken or hamburger with rice. Feed 1 cup per 20lbs per day. If he stops eating and continues to vomit then I would have your Vet take a look at him. I hope this helps and I wish Kayne the best!

Hi. My dog started licking and swallowing about 2 hours ago. The licking and swallowing has almost stopped...but he's drooling A LOT. Otherwise he is completely fine. Breathing normally, eating and drinking (he eats even if he has an upset tummy).
Thanks for using Boop by Petco! This is a classic sign of nausea so I do think there is something going on. The question is how serious that is. There are several conditions that may result in nausea such as gastroenteritis, gastrointestinal foreign body, pancreatitis, among many other reasons. We cannot prescribe medications without an actual evaluation of the patient in person. For that reason, if this continues, I would recommend you check in with a veterinarian for an examination and possibly diagnostics. Do not feed him for the next several hours to rest his belly for a bit and see if this goes away on its own. If it persists, consider having him evaluated. Best of luck!

Hi my 4 month old Labrador had a bout of roundworms. He had a dewormer Milbemax yesterday at 2 pm. Today he seemed fine until this evening: he vomited and is now disinterested in eating and seems unreasonably sleepy. Is this a bad reaction or normal?
Hello. Doom may be just a bit nauseous from the Milbemax dislodging all the roundworms, so see how he is feeling in the morning. If he still is lethargic, uninterested in eating & vomiting tomorrow, do contact your veterinarian to have him evaluated. Hopefully, he will be feeling better soon.
