My dog is sneezing and doing weird backward breathing. What to do?

My dog has been sneezing a lot lately and doing that backwards breathing that sounds like gaging. What can I do?

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Rita. Poor girl, she sounds sick and it may be she has an upper respiratory infection. I'd take her into a vet today to get this diagnosed and treated so she feels better. I hope this helps!

My 11 year old dog is either reverse sneezing or has a problem with his Sinuses

A reverse sneeze can be caused by irritants in the upper airway region so if there has been an increased amount of dust in the air this could potentially be causing the symptoms you are seeing. An environmental allergy or an upper respiratory infection could also lead to these symptoms. A reverse sneeze should resolve within a short amount of time. However, if it persist or worsens, I would have a veterinarian examine him so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. Thanks for using Boop by Petco! This is possibly due to an upper respiratory infection for example. This warrants a veterinary evaluation for further assessment and treatment. They would be able to evaluate her and if this seems likely, start her on antibiotics. I do not recommend that you take her to an agility class tomorrow as she needs to rest and also keep in mind that this could be infectious and contagious putting other dogs at risk. Best of luck!

Thanks for using Boop by Petco! Reverse sneezing can look quite scary at times so I understand your concern. However, thankfully this usually is benign and rarely becomes anything concerning. Most dogs just have reverse sneezing episodes every once in a while without causing any issues. If this ever seems to affect Diva in any way or if these episodes become too frequent, have her evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment to make sure that this is not anything else more concerning. My dog has been sneezing and coughing for weeks now. I can't afford a vet right now. What should I do? Is it something that needs antibiotics? How long does a cold last?
Hi there and thank you for using Boop by Petco to address your concern! What you are describing may be a viral infection, in which case an antibiotic will not help with this type of infection. If there is a secondary bacterial infection along with a viral infection, then antibiotics can certainly help. If she has a viral infection or kennel cough, these typically are self limiting and will resolve within 7-10 days. If you are unable to afford a veterinary exam right now, I would monitor her for signs of worsening. If she begins to have difficulty breathing, you will need to get her in to be seen by a veterinarian for the most appropriate treatment recommendations. You can get a humidifier and also keep her in the bathroom with the hot water running so that the steam fills the room and she breathes it in. I hope this helps! Hello and welcome to Boop by Petco. Fishy smelling breath can be from either dental disease or from GI disease. If she is having a hard time breathing, it could be either heart disease, primary lung disease (airway disoders, asthma, infection/pneumonia, etc.). She could also be breathing up from pain, especially if she has GI disease, this can make them have abnormal breathing as well. I would be fairly worried and would recommend bringing her to a vet right away. I would bring her to an emergency clinic if your vet isn't open. Best of luck with Luna, I hope she feels better soon!

Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! Sugar is super cute! It sounds like Sugar may be reverse sneezing. It sounds like a sucking in sneeze through the nose where they tend to hold their mouth open and grimace. I recommend searching YouTube for videos and see if that is what she is doing. It is common in some breeds (beagles). Some causes are allergies, inhaled some dust particles, foreign material stuck up the nose or above the soft palpate. If the episodes continue video tape it and take her to the Vet for an exam. I hope this helps and I wish you and Sugar the best!

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Gizmo. I do recommend that she sees her veterinarian. While she could be experiencing allergies as they are common this time of year, a respiratory tract infection is also possible. Given how frequently her symptoms are occurring, I worry that she does have an infection. If so, she may need an antibiotic. In the meantime, you can place her the bathroom while you shower. The warm humid air can help lessen any congestion she may have. I hope this information helps!
