My dog is very itchy after grooming and a short haircut. What now?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | neutered | 4 years and 4 months old | 17 lbs

I took my dog to the groomer for a bath and summer haircut on Saturday and since then he has been very itchy. I have tried itch soothing spray and 20mg of benadryl (he weighs 20lbs). Both seem to help some but I'm not sure if I should be concerned if it continues for a few days. I gave him another bath on Sunday thinking that maybe he was allergic to the shampoo ghey used at the groomer but that hasn't helped. They cut his hair very short which may be the problem . Please advise. Thank you!

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Chewbacca. It could be he has experienced an allergic reaction from something at the groomer. Typically allergic reactions require stronger medications such as steroids. I'd take him into a vet now to get this treated. By the way, he is adorable!

Lilly Lynne may have a bit of rash or razor burn if she was trimmed close. First be sure she is on appropriate flea control as she may have picked up fleas from groomer. Benedryl is acceptable to use once or twice daily if it give her relief. She may also be having a reaction to the shampoo or fragrance the groom used. I would give her a bath in dawn to wash off any residue to see if that helps. (Original blue dish soap dawn). If no improvement then she may need a vet visit. I hope she’s back to normal quickly. My year old malahi was groomed last week n now has been liking n chewing to the point of rawnedd
If he was clipped he may be itchy from the clippers. Otherwise the shampoo may have irritated his skin. I recommend a cool water bath with hypoallergenic shampoo to soothe the skin. You can also give Benadryl to reduce the itching. There is a section on this website that has information and dosages of common over the counter medications. If he’s making sores, please use a cone to prevent chewing. If he can’t reach the itchy areas you can apply a thin film of cortisone cream on the skin to reduce the itch. If these thing don’t help then please bring him in for a veterinary exam and anti inflammatory medication. Thanks for using Boop by Petco to help you care for Tank.

Thanks for using Boop by Petco! This is possibly due to allergies. It really comes down to figuring out what is causing his allergies so that they can be treated or the specific allergen avoided. A secondary infection is likely and also needs to be addressed.  There are medications such as Apoquel or prednisone which may help with the itch. There are many things that can cause allergies though in most cases they can be broken down into 3 big categories: flea, food and environmental allergies.  Allergies are usually worked up in a stepwise fashion starting with flea allergies as this is the easiest and cheapest to take care of. If not on a flea preventative, then it would be a good idea to get started on one. If already on one then it would be a good idea to change to something else (there are many new products out in the market).  If not improved in 1-3 months then it is time to move on and check for food allergies by switching to a novel diet (new protein and new carbohydrate). Hi Julie! Poor Perry - he certainly did remove a good bit of hair from that area. Since all of this chewing and itching started after his grooming, I have to wonder if he isn't allergic to the shampoo or other grooming products that were used. Some dogs can also develop a folliculitis, or inflammation at the hair follicle, after grooming, but this typically causes some redness on the skin. It's also possible that the timing is coincidental and that this problem is associated with underlying allergies or other medical conditions. As a starting point, try to give Perry a bath with a gentle hypoallergenic oatmeal shampoo or baby shampoo to try to remove any residue that may remain from the other products. If he's still licking and chewing a few days after the bath, it would be best to have him evaluated by his vet. The vet will be able to examine his skin, perform any necessary testing, and may need to prescribe some topical or oral medication to help manage his itching/chewing. Even thou

Hello and thank you for contacting Boop by Petco. I suspect Louls developed allergic reaction that makes his skin very itchy. Scratching the ears suggests ear canal infection, that is often a part of allergic skin problems. A visit to the groomers could definitely make things worse as Louls may be allergic to one of the products your groomer used on him. You should take Louls to your local vets to confirm the diagnosis and to get treatment for him. It will likely be a course of anti-inflamatory medications.

Hives Wednesday night. Went to emergency vet they gave him benadryl and a shot of steroids. Now stomach is red snd irritated again. Gave him as dose of generic benadryl 40 minutes ago.
Thanks for using Boop by Petco! I would recommend taking Shorty to the vet again for a follow up exam. Whatever was causing the allergic reaction is still in his body. He may need longer treatment with steroids. You can continue to give the Benadryl every 8 hours but if there is no change, I would see a vet. Good luck and kisses to Shorty!

Charlie came back from the groomer and he’s very itchy. Could it be the loose hairs? the vet told us to wash him but only in the morning so he has time to dry.
Loose hairs would be one possibility, and some dogs are itchy when their skin gets a little dry after grooming. If his skin looks red or he has bald patches it might be a good idea to have him examined by your vet to make sure he hasn't developed dermatitis secondary to the grooming.

Hello and thank you for contacting Boop by Petco. It is most likely a result of skin allergy. You should try soothing oatmeal shampoo (can be by TropiClean or Burt's Bees - both available online and at pet shops) - it will give Flip some relief. Once your vet is fully open, please take Flip for an appointment as he may need a prescription-only shampoo or anti-allergic tablets.
