Why do my dog's ears smell bad and look gross? Is it an infection?

Pet's info: Dog | Miniature Poodle | Male | unneutered | 11 months and 16 days old | 7 lbs

Waiting for my dogs vet to open Monday, but could you tell me what is going on with my poodles ears? I noticed an awful smell when I picked him up and then looked at his ears and they look so gross.

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Copper. It looks like he has an ear infection. Ear infections in dogs are commonly caused by yeast or bacteria. He does need to see a vet for this to have it treated. Please do not try any "home remedies" you may find on the internet. Some of them are frankly dangerous and make things so much worse. Have him seen by a vet first thing Monday. I hope this helps!

Thanks for using Boop by Petco! Based on your picture, it does look like Charlie has an ear infection. It can either be a yeast or bacterial infection, and will need topical and possibly oral medications in order to resolve. I would recommend he be evaluated by his regular veterinarian to determine what type of infection he has, and to start any medications he needs to resolve it. Good luck!

Thank you for contacting Boop by Petco with your question about Aspen. It sounds like she does have an ear infection, but it can be caused by either yeast or bacteria. Without seeing her in person, I can't say what is the cause. I'd take her into a vet today to get this diagnosed and treated. Any ear problem needs to be treated promptly as leaving it untreated can lead to hearing loss. I hope this helps!

Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! Poor Boo! The most common reason for extra moisture and wax build up in the ear is an ear infection. Ear infections are caused by bacteria and/or yeast build up which can be from allergies or just extra moisture. Ideally Boo should see your Vet to have the cause identified and appropriate drops prescribed to get rid of the infection. Ear infections are treated topically in dogs and cats. You can try this ear cleaner. I would clean out the ear every other day for 2 weeks. If there is no improvement or he worsens he should see your Vet. I also attached a video on how to clean the ears. How does a doggy ear infection look like & how do you treat it?
Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! A dog with an ear infection shakes their head a lot or scratches their ears and they may also tilt their head a little. The ear can look red, smell bad, have yellow or dark brown to black discharge in it. The dog may cry out in pain if the ear is touched. Ear infections are diagnosed at the Vet. They take a sample of the wax and look at it under the microscope for mites (unlikely in an adult dog), or an overgrowth of yeast or bacteria. The Vet then prescribes a safe ear cleaner and medicated ear drops for you to place in the ear. I hope this helps and I wish Oreo a speedy recovery!

hiya my dog, Rugsy, wont let anyone touch his ears or head but mainly his ears. they give off a bad smell, are red and have small clumps or browny blackish gunk
Sounds like Rugsy has a bad ear infection. These can be painful and if left untreated can damage the ear drum and progress further down the ear. He should see your family vet for an exam and ear cytology and to get the right medications. Pain medications and/or anti inflammatories may be helpful as well. My dog has really dark wax in his ear and is scratching them alot. They are warm to the touch.. And he has started whining when he is scratching them. There red on the inside of the ear. Is that an ear infection?
Hello and thank you for contacting Boop by Petco. It looks like ear canal infection. It is usually yeast or bacterial infection in origin. Please, take Gunner to your local vets today as he will need a course of ear drops with antibiotics to get better.

Hi my 1 year old dog has some kind of rash inside both ears which is raised, grey red looking and smells a bit. I have attached a photo. Is this something I can treat myself?
It looks like your kid has a pretty severe ear infection there. The redness is inflammation and the gray area is thickening of the external ear canal from chronic inflammation. What would be best would be for your pup to be seen by your family vet for an ear exam and cytology. In order to treat this appropriately your vet will need to know if there are bacteria (and what type) or yeast or both in the ear canals and if the eardrum is intact. An anti inflammatory may also be needed because of the thickening. If ear infections are a chronic problem for your pup underlying allergy may also need to be explored. I have noticed a foul odor coming from Sebastian's left ear. I have been cleaning his ear with the same wipes that I use to clean his folds it has a ani fungal however his ear still smells. Is there anything you can recommend?
Hi and thank you for using Boop by Petco. I would take Sebastian in to your veterinarian to perform an ear cytology. This is a diagnostic test where they look at the debris in his ear under the microscope. This will help your veterinarian determine if Sebastian has an ear infection and what is causing it (yeast, bacteria, mites or any combination or all of the above). There are multiple treatments for ear infections depending on what the underlying cause is. Your vet will help determine the best treatment for him! I would take him to the vet sooner rather than later as ear infections can be uncomfortable! Good luck!

Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! Poor Duffy! Ear infections can be from allergies or from extra moisture in the ear. They are caused by an overgrowth of yeast and/or bacteria. Ear infections are treated by flushing out the extra wax with an ear cleaner and by using medicated drops specific for the type of infection the dog has. If the ears are very inflamed and painful then I prescribe a course of steroids. Duffy should see your Vet for an exam, ear cytology (smear of wax on a slide to look for the cause) and to have medications prescribed. I hope this helps and I wish Duffy the best!
