Is it safe for my 10-week puppy to potty outside without all shots?

Can I put my 10 week old puppy on a leash and have him potty outside in an apartment complex when he hasn’t had his third set of vaccines?

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Odysseus. He will only be old enough to have had one or two sets of vaccines at 10 weeks of age. If you take him to the same spot every time and make sure there are no unvaccinated dogs around, it should be ok. I hope this helps!

Thanks for using Boop by Petco! Great question. It would actually be best to keep your pup in the backyard or inside until after he receives the first 2 sets of vaccines. This is to protect him against diseases he could potentially get from not being vaccinated. For this time period, you could play with him in the backyard for example. Good luck and have a good night!

The very real risk of putting her on the ground (public sidewalk, dog park, even petstore floor) is that she could contract a disease called parvovirus which is shed in the feces of infected dogs. If she walks over parvovirus particles (where other owners scooped up infected feces), and licks her paws, she could contract parvovirus which usually results in serve life threatening diarrhea and dehydration and requires expensive overnight care at an emergency hospital often lasting several days. Puppies are usually vaccinated against distemper, parvovirus, adenovirus, and parainfluenza virus at 8 weeks, again at 12 weeks and again at 14 weeks with the last booster at 14 + weeks of age in order for immunity to be effective for a full year. (Other vaccines include Bordatella at 8+ weeks of age, Rabies at 12+ weeks of age, lepto and Lyme at 12+ weeks of age -lepto and Lyme each need to be boosted 3-4 weeks after the initial dose to provide a year's worth of immunity and are often not given i

Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! She should be fine going out in your yard. There is a fine line between socialization, house training and exposing the puppy to infectious disease. Most of the worrisome disease are from direct dog to dog contact from sneezing/coughing or fecal-oral. I think your yard is fine. I do not recommend contact with other puppies or dogs are not vaccinated. Keep her up to date on her DHPP by getting it every 3-4 weeks until she receives 2 past 12 weeks of age. I wish you the best!

My puppy just got his first shots 9 days ago, is it okay to take him outside in a very low traffic area to use the bathroom? I wouldn’t be walking him, just taking him to try and get him used to the idea at least of using the bathroom outside.
It depends on your area. I do recommend outside training with dogs that were vaccinated once. Although, still caution people because the puppies are not fully vaccinated. Make sure he does not come into contact with other dogs unless you know the people and their dogs are healthy and up to date on vaccinations. I would also recommend wiping his paws off when he comes in from outside. Thank you for using Boop by Petco.

It honestly depends on how many other pets are in your apartment complex. Some viruses, such as parvo, can stay in the environment for several months. If you are taking him out, making sure to use paths that aren't frequented by other pets, or even bringing out a potty pad for him to go on (to get used to the routine of going out to go potty, but remaining safe) can help. As for socialization, socializing with people or pets whose vaccine history you know is the best option until your vet gives the OK to be around strange pets.

I prefer she not be around other dogs until she’s 14 weeks old and has finished her vaccinations. You certainly can take her out and about as long as you minimize her contact with other dogs. Thanks for using Boop by Petco to help you care for Mia.

Thank you for using Boop by Petco and congratulations on your new puppy! Unfortunately, Maximus is not fully vaccinated at this point, so he should not be going outside. Depending on your state, he can be fully vaccinated by 12 or 16 weeks. If this was his first round of shots, he will need a booster in 2-4 weeks and then his Rabies vaccine at 12-16 weeks as well as his last booster. Maximus should have minimal contact with other dogs (even where other dogs have gone to the bathroom) as you can’t be sure they are not carrying any of the viruses that Maximus is not vaccinated for that can make him very sick. I know it is difficult to keep a large active puppy inside, but your vet can work with you to have Maximus fully vaccinated in a reasonable amount of time.

You can get started right away! Consistency is the key to house training, so be sure to take Emmitt outside often - after eating, napping, playing, or at least every 2-3 hours. Reward appropriate potty behavior with praise and a small treat. If you catch him in the act of eliminating in the house, say "no" and take him straight outside. If you find an accident around the house, there is no need to scold or punish him. The main concern at this point is that Emmitt is not fully vaccinated against some highly contagious viruses, such as parvovirus. Until he has received his full distemper/parvovirus vaccine series, keep him away from other dogs. This includes areas where other dogs may have previously eliminated, such as parks or around your neighborhood. Keep Emmitt confined to your backyard until his vaccine series is complete.

Yes, I think it is ok for her to walk around your property. If she is not completely vaccinated, then I would keep her away from unknown dogs or unvaccinated puppies, dog parks, and pet stores. She should be okay around other dogs that you know the owners have stayed current on vaccines. I am not a fan of peepads unless you plan on using them for life because they just train a dog that going potty inside is okay!

Hi, after some advice about puppy vaccinations. Took our pup for his final vaccination today at 10 weeks hoping to take him out in a week or 2. Now the bet has told us that we have to start the vaccinations all over again due to the first vaccination
Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! At 10 weeks of age, regardless of what vaccines Ted had previously, he is not old enough to consider him fully vaccinated. We vaccinate starting at 7-8 weeks and give the DHPP (or whatever version of that vaccine) every 3-4 weeks until they receive TWO past 12 weeks of age. I have seen dogs who got their last vaccine at 12 weeks still get parvo (at risk breeds like rottweilers and pit bulls). So while I am not in full agreement with the reason you were given I agree that he is not fully vaccinated yet. There is a fine line between protecting him from disease and socialization. He can be socialized with well vaccinated dogs and can go for walks on side walks. He shouldn't play with puppies or dogs where you do not know their vaccine status or play in dog parks.
