What is this dark, soft bump on my dog's ear? Is it a concern?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Cockapoo | Female | spayed | 6 years and 10 months old | 30 lbs

I found a small, soft bump on the back of Sunny’s ear a few weeks ago, looking like a pimple but dark under the skin. Because of Covid we just researched it but didn’t find anything that looks like it, so left it alone to see if it would heal. Since then it hasn’t changed in size or colour. Sunny doesn’t seem to be bothered by it if we touch it. She’s otherwise healthy as normal. Do you know what it could be?

Hi, and thanks for your question. Although a picture of it would help to give you a more specific answer, this lump/bump/growth should be ideally examined by your local vet to have a diagnosis established. Your vet may want to perform an FNA (fine needle aspiration) or a biopsy to sample the bump and determine its underlying nature. Differentials would include skin cysts, infections, benign or more malignant type of tumors. I am sorry, the pics did not show in the previous question. Because of the dark color, Melanomas may be considered in this case and a check up is even more important and urgent as these tumors can be usually quite malignant and aggressive treatment is often needed.
