My 11-week Yorkie puppy has a heart murmur and labored breathing. Is this an emergency?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Took my 11 week old Yorkie for her wellness checkup. The vet found a grade 5 heart murmur. She didn’t eat anything for the last half of the day and has slept all evening and night. Her breathing has seemed labored. I just counted her respiration’s and they’re 83. She’s not whining or anything, just sleeping and not really doing much :/

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question. I'm quite concerned about her. Her breathing rate is high for resting, and labored breathing is a medical emergency. I think you should take her into an ER vet now to get checked out. Best of luck.
