My puppy ate grapes, now she's constipated and butt scooting. Is this normal?

I accidentally gave my 5 month old puppy grapes without prior knowledge of the toxins. (I feel horrible) she’s been to the vet. So far vitals were good, and so was her kidney functioning. She got home and has been her normal self. Eating, drinking, playing, sleeping, and peeing. But it’s been a full day and she hadn’t pooped. She has slid her butt on the flood twice. Should I be worried?

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Pepper. Mistakes happen, and you did the right thing by taking her into a vet right away. It may be her bottom is itchy or she is a bit constipated. Feed her canned food and add water to it to see if that helps. If she hasn't pooped in another 24 hours, then I would be worried and have her seen by a vet. I hope this helps!

Hi there and thanks for using Boop by Petco! A few tablespoons of plain canned pumpkin (not the pie filling) or a tablespoon of Psyllium powder (unflavored) can help move things along. However the other symptoms you mentioned do sound concerning to me. Decreased appetite along with drinking more water frequently and constipation may signal a kidney function issue, liver issue, or may be due the development of diabetes among other causes. My recommendation would be to have Pretty girl seen by her veterinarian as soon as possible for an exam and perhaps some blood work to check her organ function as there may be an underlying health issue here. Thanks for using Boop by Petco! She may be constipated. You can start by trying to use something to try to relieve her if she has constipation. You could start giving her 2 tablespoons of canned pumpkin with her meals which may help with cases of mild constipation. If that does not improve this, have her evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment though it is likely that this will resolve. Good luck and have a great day!

I would suggest to provide his normal food and monitor closely. If he continue to try to defecate without result he might be constipated. I would also recommend to have a blood test done to check the kidney function. Unfortunately grapes are toxic for dog and can cause damage to the kidneys. Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! Constipation can be a huge issue with bottle fed puppies and kittens. I recommend mixing 2 different types of puppy formulas together and adding extra water. Hopefully that will help. She will need to be seen by Friday by a Vet if she still hasn't pooped. Constipation can be a huge issue in puppies this young. I would also recommend early weaning, starting around 4 weeks. Good luck!

My dog has not urinated or dedicated since early this morning, over 12 hours ago. She seems to be acting normally, eating and drinking but I am concerned. Is there anything that I should do?
Thanks for using Boop by Petco! If she is otherwise acting fine, then she is probably going to eventually go especially urinate. It is not completely abnormal for a dog to not defecate in a 24 hour period as sometimes they can get a bit constipated. If this is the case, you can add 2-3 teaspoons of canned pumpkin to her food which may help with constipation. I would though expect her to urinate soon at least before the 24 hour mark. I would continue to monitor her if she is otherwise doing fine. If more than 24 to 30 hours pass by, have her evaluated by your veterinarian. If there is nothing wrong with her, she will most likely go potty by then. Good luck and have a good night!

I would start her on gruel which will help form bigger stools. Often as puppies age they do not defecate as often so she may not go after every meal. As long as she’s eating and feeling normal with no bloating she should be fine. Thanks for using Boop by Petco to help you care for your puppy.

Hi there! Thanks for using Boop by Petco! Grapes can be very toxic to dogs. It really depends on how many were eaten though some dogs, can have a toxicity with a small amount of grapes. If this happened within the last hour, your veterinarian could still induce vomiting on Hope to see if you can retrieve the ingested grapes. Grapes can result in kidney failure and this toxicity is very serious. Usually, affected dogs are hospitalized for treatment and very carefully monitored. I recommend you have her evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Keeping my fingers crossed for a speedy recovery!

Hi and thanks for using Boop by Petco! Sounds pretty normal for Scout. Sorry she had the gut upset recently. It's pretty common for the elimination cycle to get disrupted when something like this happens. If everything else is fine, you should just wait and she will most likely have a bowel movement soon. If she is showing signs of sickness and straining, you would want her to see her vet. They can evaluate her and advise any tests that might be needed to get her back on track. One thing to try at home is some canned pumpkin, not pumpkin filling for pies, just canned pumpkin. Maybe 1/2 - 1 teaspoon with her meals. It's high fiber, dogs like it, and it enhances elimination. I hope she has a bowel movement soon. Also make sure that she drinks plenty of fresh water.
