My new dog won't let me touch him. How can I help him adjust?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | unspayed | 9 months and 2 days old | 9 lbs

I just bought my pet off a website called pets lovers. The dog is mostly Chihuahua but I believe might be mixed with miniature pinscher possibly. Either way the dog has been here for 2 days he is definitely eating and drinking and moving around the apartment exploring and being inquisitive which are usually qualities of this type of breed. However he will not allow me to touch him and won't come close to me will this eventually end?

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Nacho. He is very cute. It is scary to move to a new home, and some dogs can be cautious about being touched and getting closed. As he adjusts to his new home and you, yes this should end. I hope this helps!
