My 22lb dog licked cocoa powder. Is a small amount toxic to dogs?

My dog licked some cocoa powder that was dusted on my shirt! I don’t know how much exactly is toxic to dogs but he is 22lbs. Is there cause for concern?

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Leo. Based on his weight, he would need to ingest at least 10g of cocoa powder to cause mild to moderate symptoms. Licking some that was on your shirt should not cause any problems. I hope this helps!

I'm eating out and I had dessert with coco powdered on it. If I get powder on my clothes or myself and I'm around my cat can I make him sick ?

My boxer (about 55 lbs) licked some cocao powder (not cocoa) from a mixture in a cup. She just licked the sides, but definitely had some. I’m worried about her. She is sleeping, but her stomach is rumbling.
It is unlikely that your dog ate enough cacao powder to actually get intoxicated. He would have to eat 1 oz or more (at least 4 of those packets)of the powder in order to get a problem. So you do not have to worry.

Hello and thank you for contacting Boop by Petco. I don't think there is anything to worry about. The toxic dose for milk chocolate is about 5g per each pound of body weight. So, your Stella would have to eat about 70g of milk chocolate before we would recommend any treatment. She should be fine, I don't expect she will develop any concerning symptoms at all

Our Shepard mix drank about a 12 oz cup of mocha cappuccino coffee drink. It has Dutched cocoa powder in it. Is this poisonous to the dog?
Oh dear! You're right that cocoa powder can certainly be toxic to dogs; coffee can as well, since they don't tolerate caffeine very well. But the good news is, I would not expect a single prepackaged coffee drink like this to contain enough of either one to cause any serious toxicity issues in a large-breed dog. It's possible that he may have some mild stomach upset if he isn't used to eating things like this, but otherwise I would not expect to see any serious problems. To be safe, it would be best to monitor him for the next 12 hours for any signs of toxicity - which would include repeated episodes of vomiting or diarrhea, restlessness or hyperactivity, muscle tremors, or even seizures. If you see anything that concerns you, you can always take him to the vet to be checked.

I caught my dog licking a butterfinger candy bar. I took it away and gave him some milk. The candy bar itself is melted and I don't think he ate much. What should I do?
Because Domino only licked it, he would not have consumed enough chocolate to cause any toxicity, so it's not a problem. I would caution about giving him milk, however, as this causes GI upset in dogs and can make him vomit and have diarrhea. It's not recommended to give milk when dogs consume chocolate, as it does nothing to help with the symptoms of chocolate toxicity.

Hello. So sorry this happened. I would not be very worried about this. I plugged all the details into a calculator and she did not ingest a toxic dose. Milk chocolate is the least toxic to dogs and she only ate 1/2 packet which is about 10 grams. You may notice some minimal symptoms if she has any at all. These would include upset stomach, diarrhea and some restlessness. If you are worried at all you should always take Bella to your vet. While she didn't eat a toxic dose, each animal is an individual and there is no way for me to be sure how her system will react. Hope this helps. Best wishes.

Thank you for contacting Boop by Petco with your question about Luna. While it's not good that she ate this chocolate, you don't need to do anything. The amount she ate will cause minimal to no reaction. At most you may see some GI upset, but other than that, she should be ok. I hope this helps!

If this was milk chocolate then there is a very low risk that this was enough to cause any major issues with your pets. Dark chocolate has a bit higher rate of toxicity risk, but even still it would have to be ingestion of the powder directly for that to be considered a substantial ingestion amount. If it was only a quarter size of liquid left then they should be fine. Continue to feed them normally and monitor for the next 24 hrs for any upset stomach symptoms (i.e. vomiting, diarrhea, lack of appetite) and have the seen by your vet if this occurs, but again there is a very low chance this will. My dog got into a bag of 100% Cacao powder. I am not sure how much he ingested. The bag was still full when I found it on the floor. Not sure what I should do.
Thank you for contacting Boop by Petco with your question about Gibson. This is a medical emergency and you need to take him into a vet immediately. This is one of the most toxic types of chocolate and takes the least amount to cause toxicity. Because you don't know how much he ingested, you have to take him into a vet now to get treated for chocolate toxicity. Best of luck.
