My dog was spayed. Is bandage leakage normal or an emergency?

Pet's info: Dog | Goldendoodle | Female | spayed | 6 months and 7 days old | 45 lbs

Willow was spayed on Friday and our vet is closed over the weekend and I am unable to reach anyone using the weekend contact info I was given. Her behavior isn’t abnormal, she is acting and eating as expected. She has a bandage over the incision site so I can’t tell if she has damaged the sutures but there is leekage on the bandage and I am unsure if she will be okay if we wait until 8am for our vet to open in the morning

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Willow. Thank you for the picture, it's very helpful. If she was spayed over the weekend, this looks like a normal bit of discharge. It's not excessive and doesn't look there is any bright red blood in it. Since she is otherwise acting normally, it's fine to wait until 8am to give her vet a call, but I suspect they may say it's normal discharge. I hope this helps!

Thank you for contacting Boop by Petco with your question. This may be vaginal discharge, and vaginal discharge can be common. It can also be that discharge from the vagina can be a sign of an infection called vaginitis. Now this would be much more worrying if there was pus or blood in the discharge, or if she was lethargic, not eating, and not drinking. Given that she is acting normally, it's fine to wait to take her into the vet to get this checked out on Tuesday (after the Monday holiday). If this discharge appears bloody, contains pus, she becomes lethargic, or she stops eating and drinking, have her seen by an ER vet immediately. I hope this helps.

Thank you for contacting Boop by Petco with your question about Bella. It is bit red and there is some discharge around it, but you did just get it done yesterday. It will take time for her to heal. Based on the redness, I would get it checked out by the vet to be safe. I hope this helps!

We adopted Mia 3 days ago. One day before we adopted her she was spayed. She’s somewhere between 3-5 months old. Tonight we noticed she had been lightly bleeding from her incision. We let her off leash today and think she may have irritated it doing
Hi there and thank you for using Boop by Petco to address your concern. Judging from the photos, it appears as though the area around the incision is slightly swollen with a small amount of blood evident. If Mia is otherwise normal and the color of her gums is nice and pink, I would suggest applying some pressure to the incision area and holding this for 10-15 minutes to see if the bleeding stops. With her being hyper, she certainly could have caused a blood vessel in her skin to begin bleeding. If the bleeding does not stop with pressure, I would get her examined by a veterinarian as soon as possible. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction. Our 6 month old labradoodle had her spay on Friday she seems ok but I checked the site today and there appears to be dry yellowish stuff around the part of the site I can't see any bleeding or fluid or pus
Thanks for using Boop by Petco! This is probably ok for now though it does indicate that there was some discharge and potentially an infection. I would recommend that you keep a very close eye on the incision site. If you notice any active discharge (moist instead of dry), bleeding or pain, have her evaluated as soon as possible to make sure it is not an active infection. Keep the area clean for now. If no more discharge is noted, it is possible that it will heal completely on its own. Good luck and have a nice day!

Hello. Thanks for the very good picture. The incision does look a little puffy, but I do not see this as an emergency. I would apply a warm compress twice daily for 10 minutes & see how it looks on Monday. Even though her surgery was 2 weeks ago, the underlying muscle is still trying to heal & she may be experiencing a suture reaction. As long as there is no discharge from the incision, either bloody or clear, she should be fine, but do try to curtail her activity , especially jumping on furniture, running up & down stairs, etc. to not put more stress on the incision until you can have her seen. Does the suture incision site seem okay? (Day1, after spay surgery) At this moment, she is just a little lethargic and doesn’t move.
Hello, thank you for using Boop by Petco. The incision, based on this one photo, looks normal to me for one day post-op. It is not uncommon for dogs to be lethargic a day after surgery. If she is wearing a cone collar, many dogs will not walk or move around much due to the cone. That being said, I do not recommend you take the cone off. Eventually they will figure out how to move around with the cone. If she is not wearing a cone, she should be. Ultimately, you know her best. If she does not seem right to you then call your vet or take her to an urgent care vet. Hope this helps. Best wishes.

My dog got spayed today and they had to repair a hernia. She was going through a false pregnancy. They said that they stitched inside and glued outside but I’m afraid the outside is open. The vet is closed until Tuesday but I want to see if I need to
I received the picture that you forwarded to customer service. I presume the area that you are concerned about is the area outlined in red. When we close the skin with surgical glue, there can be a small amount of tissue that looks like it does in the picture. I don't see anything that is particularly concerning in that picture. Make sure to keep Mia rested and use an e-collar so she cannot lick at the incision. The area that you outlined should not look any larger and should not ooze any discharge. My dog was spayed on Thursday and her incision looks swollen and red. Is this normal?
Hello and welcome to Boop by Petco. The incision looks inflammed, but this could be part of the normal healing process. If there is any discharge, OR if the wound looked better than this previously and is now looking MORE red than say Friday or Saturday, I would take her back to the vet right away. If it is steadily looking better, and she is eating, drinking, pooping and peeing normally, then you can continue to monitor it. Best of luck with Lilo.

Got my pup spayed today and I looked at her incision and and there blood around it , I don’t think it’s wet blood because it’s not getting on anything but I don’t know if I should be worried.
The image shows no drips or tracks of blood. This may be some normal post op discharge. If she will allow, you can use a plain, unscented baby wipe to gently clean around the incision. Keep an e-collar (cone) on her and restrict her activity to just leash walks for elimination. Avoid or prevent running, jumping, stairs or rough play as much as possible. If she has a crate, consider crating her for the night. Monitor for active bleeding, discharge, lethargy or pale gums. If any of these develop, she should be seen by your veterinarian or at the nearest veterinary ER.

Hi there! No picture came through with your question. If you re-submit with an in-focus picture of her incision, I will be more than happy to take a look. If the discharge is a translucent red color and in small amounts, it could be a normal part of the healing process. If the discharge is thick, green/yellow, or milky, that may indicate an infection that would require a course of oral antibiotics to treat. In the mean time, please do not put anything on the incision. Creams and ointments will trap bacteria underneath them and it is better to leave the area open to the air. If she is licking or bothering the incision, please restrain her from doing so by using a cone collar, inflatable tube collar, or shirt. I hope this helps! Thanks for using Boop by Petco!
