Dog ate ham bone, now has white poop. Is it too much calcium?

I let my dog eat a Ham Bone (vacuum sealed from target in pet section) over a period of three days. I noticed today her poop is whitish. I read online it’s too much calcium. She isn’t acting different, should I feel her a little canned pumpkin & maybe give her some cranberry pills to help?

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Luna. The white color of her poop is likely due to the bone. Since she's not acting differently, I would not worry and there is no need to give her anything. She should be fine. I hope this helps!

Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! I would worry about acholic feces which is the absence of bile in the stool. This is when the bile is retained in the blood which makes a dogs stools pale or putty colored. This can indicate an bile obstruction, liver or pancreatic disease. White stools can also be seen in dogs eating a raw food diet or a diet too high in calcium or if they ate something containing bone. If Gracie's stools continue to be white bring a sample and Gracie to the Vet for an exam. I wish you the best!

My dog has normal brown stools sometimes but he has gets light yellow/white poop with it and I read that it could mean he has live problems. He eat a lot if these white dental bones and I’m not sure if I should be concerned
These signs could be compatible with a colitis, which is an inflammation of the last part of the intestine, the colon, usually related to dietary indiscretion. As a first approach, I would suggest to start feeding with a bland diet based on boiled chicken and rice in small portion every 6 hours for the following 48hours. Then gradually reintroduce the normal diet over 5 days. I would definitely recommend a veterinary check up if the signs persist or you notice vomiting, lethargy or inappetence. My puppy just have a foul poop after christmas is it possibly because of the ham she have eaten?
Thank you for submitting your question regarding Luna. Yes, a diet change can alter the feces. If she develops vomiting or diarrhea, she should see her veterinarian. Otherwise, the feces should go back to normal once she is on her regular diet. I hope this information helps!

Dog ate a ham bone one day ago. She has eaten a bit, drank a bunch of water and has pooped 3 times since. Twice it was somewhat solid tan poop and once was tan diarrhea. Should I be worried and go to a vet or will she be ok ?
If there is no blood in the diarrhea and as long as Fate is eating and drinking normally with no vomiting it is probably okay to monitor her. Ham bones can cause bloody diarrhea, constipation or intestinal obstruction so if you see her straining to defecate or you see the signs above you should see a vet right away. If she doesn’t have any dietary restrictions you could try feeding a bland diet of 25% boiled chicken and 75% plain white rice for the next couple of days to help with the diarrhea.

Her stool used to be deep yellowish in color ..or rather brown...but suddenly two days ago the colour started to change,and became off white... though texture is as usual..her activity level and apetite is normal..is there anything to worry?
Thanks for using Boop by Petco! If Dalia's activity and appetite are normal, that is very reassuring. Have you started a new food or treat by chance? Sometimes a change in diet will cause the stool to change color. Sometimes a mild viral infection can also cause this but again, I would not worry unless she loses her appetite or becomes lethargic. Changes in diet commonly cause digestive upsets but the white stools are most likely due to calcium fragments from the bones (they would normally be brittle/crumbly stools) and black stool often indicates bleeding within the bowel (due to infection or scratches from bone fragments). I would monitor very closely for any vomiting, constipation or abdominal discomfort which can indicate a fragment may be obstructing the bowel. I would also recommend small, frequnt meals of a bland diet or familiar kibble to try to manintain gut movement to encourage digestion of any remaining bone fragments

It's possible that her poop is white because the mineral content of her diet is too high. If she's on a grain free or boutique food, or worse a home cooked diet. I'd recommend switching to a reputable brand like Hills, Purina, or Royal Canin to see if that helps at all. If you're not seeing a change, or Penny seems ill in any way, it's time to go for a vet visit. Good luck!

I would monitor her closely for any gastrointestinal upset such as vomiting or diarrhea. Acute intake of fatty foods can cause acute pancreatitis in dogs, which can range from an easy fix to a multi-day hospitalization with potential for life-threatening complications. If Xena becomes inappetant, has episodes of vomiting or diarrhea, or simply isn't acting herself, I recommend having her evaluated by a veterinarian. It is unlikely that the high-calcium buffalo treats will cause any issues. I hope this is helpful!

Thanks for using Boop by Petco! Diarrhea can be observed with conditions such as colitis, gastroenteritis, dietary indiscretion, intestinal parasites, among many other possibilities. This could of course be due to the calcium supplement. Unless giving this has been directed by a veterinarian, you can start by discontinuing this calcium supplement to see if that is the cause of the diarrhea. She may not need to be on any supplements. Keep in mind that is she is being fed a complete diet, she should not require supplementation. I recommend that you have Lucy evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. They may choose to check for parasites and to start medications for diarrhea depending on the results. Good luck! Hoping for a speedy recovery!

This can be a sign that the food she has eaten is moving too quickly through the GI tract to pick up bile. It can also be a sign of a liver or biliary issue. Given that she is ok otherwise, I'd keep an eye on her for now. If she develops other signs such as vomiting, lethargy, or loss of appetite, then I would be very concerned and have her seen by an ER vet right away. Otherwise, it's fine to wait until Monday to have her seen. This weekend, feed her a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice. I hope this helps.
