My dog swallowed a bottle cap 5 days ago, no symptoms. Vet now?

Pet's info: Dog | Cocker Spaniel | Male | unneutered | 14 years and 4 months old | 28 lbs

My 13 year old cocker spaniel swallowed a metal bottle cap. We have been watching him for 5 days. He has no symptoms. No fever , diarrhea or anything like that. He is eating and drinking normally, and there is no blood in his poop ? What should I do ? Wait some more or go to the vet tomorrow? I’m scared if he has to have surgery, he will not wake up ? But I don’t want to cause internal damage either ?

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Ziggy. Oh no, that's not good! I would wait some more. He's not showing any signs of a problem, and since he's otherwise acting normally, there's no need to rush him into a vet. Now if he does start showing signs of a problem, then I would take him into a vet right away. It may be this has already passed without problem. If there was internal damage, you would see signs of a problem such as a loss of appetite, lethargy, and blood in his poop. If it would make you feel better to have him checked out, that's certainly ok, but it's also fine to keep an eye on him for now. I hope this helps!

You can observe Bruno closely for signs of a gastrointestinal foreign body. These would include vomiting, decreased appetite, lethargy, abdominal pain, straining to have a bowel movement. If any of these occur, seek veterinary care. Luckily it has been 4 days with no issue, and usually an object will have passed through the GI tract in this amount of time. Also, the bottle cap would easily be seen on an x-ray so it will be very easy to see the problem if he does start acting ill.

My dog ate a water bottle cap 6 days ago. He has been acting normal eating, drinking, playing.. the only problem is he has thrown up four times now and no cap. Should i be concerned or should i wait a a bit longer. P.S he has eaten a sock in the past
If he is eating and drinking normally, and does not throw up after he eats, he may be ok. The only way to know for sure is to take him in for xrays. Your vet may want to do a barium study to actually see if the cap is still somewhere in his GI tract, as plastic often does not show up on a regular X-ray. There is a chance that he has passed it or will pass it in his stool. If he keeps throwing up, or starts acting lethargic and puny, or doesn't want to eat, you can't wait any longer and need to see your vet. Hope that helps!

I'm not so sure but I think my dog ate a plastic bottle cap that was already chewed but if he did how many days would I notice something wrong and what symptoms should I look for?
It could take between 1-4 days until you notice symptoms, if the cap gets stuck in the intestines it could cause a blockage, you will need to monitor him for vomiting, diarrhea, lack of appetite and lethargy. if any of those symptoms persist, you will need to take him to the vet ASAP.

My dog hasn’t gone poop in 2 days and also early this morning ate a litter bottle cap
IF Kenzo is eating,drinking and acting normal I would not be to concerned if he has not defecated. Sometimes if dogs have diarrhea it will take a few days for them to have normal stool. However, if he is lethargic, vomiting or not eating I would recommend taking him to a vet because not defecating can be a sign of obstruction. If Kenzo is having diarrhea I would also recommend taking him to the vet to determine the cause. In younger dogs parasites, virus and even indigestion can cause diarrhea. I hope he feels better soon

It could still become an issue in the future since Ollie is so small. Signs to watch out for are vomiting, poor appetite, and lethargy. If he experiences any of those issues, or just seems off, a vet visit for x-rays and possible blood work is in order. Good luck!

My dog, ravyn, ate a bottle cap....What will happen to her? Is it serious?
It will either pass through or it could potential get stuck and cause an obstruction. If she chewed it in pieces than it will likely pass through without getting stuck. It may cause some inflammation in her intestines and you may notice some diarrhea. If she starts vomitng, becomes lethargic, or stops eating than she needs to be seen right away.

Small objects like water bottle cap will be most likely passed in stools. However, if you see signs like vomiting, abdominal pain or lack of appetite you should take your dog to your local vets without delay.

My puppy ate a plastic safety cap from a plastic sports bottle last Monday. He has just been sick through the night and brought it back up whole. Will he now be ok or would there be concerns for internal damage and if so what are the signs?
It is great news that your puppy vomited the cap up. Now you will not have to worry about a foreign body and intestinal blockage! The plastic cap may have caused some gastritis and/or esophagitis (inflammation of the stomach and esophagus) which may cause some reflux and GI upset. If Bertie is eating and drinking well you should have nothing to worry about. If she stops wanting to eat or continues vomiting, you may want to take her in to see your vet so she can be prescribed some gastroprotectants. I hope this helps. Thanks for using Boop by Petco. Can you take Brody into another vet for a second opinion? Unfortunately I cannot give a definitive one since I can't see him in person. You may feel better speaking to another vet. Given that he's otherwise acting normal, I would agree with your vet you may be able to wait, but if he starts vomiting, has diarrhea, becomes anorexic, and/or very lethargic, then it cannot wait. My dog just ate a plastic water bottle cap that was previously chewed and wasn't a full non chewed cap. Half of it was chewed away. Should I be worried?
It depends on the size of the cap ingested. The biggest concern would be it getting stuck in the intestinal tract which would require surgery to get out. It may be better to take Jax in to induce vomiting. If he ingested it in the past 1 hour then there is a good chance he could vomit it back out. A veterinarian can give a injection that works well to induce vomiting.
