My dog hurt her nail, she's restless and in pain. Does she need a vet?

My dog seems to have hurt her nail. She is restless and doesn’t seem to want to lie down. It is not bleeding. I’m not sure what to do. Will it heal on its own or do I need to do something?

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Bailey. Poor girl! The nail looks like it has separated from the quick, which will be very painful to her. That would be why she is restless and does not want to lie down. You don't want to leave her in pain, and unfortunately there are no OTC pain relievers you can give her. Many human ones are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given. You will need to take her into the vet in the morning to get this treated. Do not feed her breakfast in the morning, as she will need to be sedated to have the nail removed. The vet can also give her pain medication. I hope this helps!

Thank you for using Boop by Petco! I can see that Diesel's nail appears to be broken. I am unable to see what is going on at the root of the nail, but it is likely due to trauma. The condition is likely painful due to damage to the quick, or the part of the nail that has blood vessels and nerves, and may require removal of the nail under sedation to promote healing. I recommend having Diesel seen by a vet as soon as possible who can prescribe anti-inflammatory and pain medication and bandage the paw if necessary. In the meantime, you can get Diesel an E-collar or "cone" to prevent him from licking the area and causing further trauma.

Hello, and thanks for your question on Boop by Petco. Poor Harley! Torn toe nails (including dew claws) are common injuries, and thankfully are not medical emergencies so she should be ok until morning. If you can see a nail that appears broken, sometimes soaking in an epsom salt bath for 5-10 minutes twice daily can a bit. You can either soak the affected paw in a little bucket of epsom water, or you can fill the tub 2-3 inches and have her stand in it. However, if any of this causes her stress or she resists it, then I wouldn't push it - she could get more hurt if she's struggling against you. Otherwise, I recommend keeping her on level ground when she needs to go outside, so she's not accidentally bending that nail, and keep her as quiet as possible until she can be seen by your vet. I do NOT recommend giving her anything for pain. None of our human medications are going to be safe or effective, and anything you give her could interfere with a better medication that your vet

Ouch, poor girl! This nail will need to be removed. Yes, you do have to take her into the vet. I'd take her first thing in the morning to get this treated. Do not feed her in the morning in case she needs to be sedated. I'd put an Ecollar on her tonight to keep her from licking at it. I will put a link below on how to make one at home. Hello. If the nail has stopped bleeding, then just leave the gauze wrap on to protect the nail until morning. If there is blood coming through the bandage, & it has been more than a couple of hours, I would have her seen as soon as you can. Hi there and thank you for using Boop by Petco to address your concern. I would recommend taking her in to the vet to have this cut back so that the nail does not snag on anything and tear. She may need an antibiotic as well as a pain medication. Angel will be ok and it does not appear that there are any other concerning changes where the broken nail is. I would recommend taking him to a veterinarian. He should get antibiotics and anti-inflammatories. If not treated appropriately these can sometimes create a bone infection, which can take a long time to clear up and be very painful for the dog. The nail also may need to be pulled off and the paw bandaged so it stays clean and Sullivan does not lick at it. I would call your veterinarian in the morning and if you cannot get in right away I would recommend getting a bootie from a pet store to cover the toe. I would not bandage the toe I would just place the bootie on if you cannot get to your veterinarian tomorrow. Thank you for using Boop by Petco.

Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! Poor Ellie! Ellie's nail is torn and it needs to be cut back to the level of the break. MOST dogs will tolerate this at the Vet with out sedation but it is dog dependent. Cutting it is very quick and only hurts for the brief second. But if Ellie will not tolerate the Vet touching her feet then it would require a quick sedation. That may be the best option as then the vet can clip all her remaining nails as well. I would call when your Vet opens and ask for an appointment for a broken nail and that you would like sedation so they can trim the rest of her nails. Once the nail is cut back she will stop licking it and the pain will be gone. Sometimes we prescribe anti-inflammatories and antibiotics if indicated. I wish Ellie the best!

Hello. Ouch! Morty did break the nail at the quick. Honestly, it would be best to take Morty to your vet & just clip the nail off. It will hurt for a second, but leaving the nail like this will cause constant pain, & may lead to an infection up the nail bed. Your vet can dress this properly & send Morty home with some antibiotics & pain medication that will help this to heal quickly. Thanks for using Boop by Petco.

Hello. Unfortunately, the only way to get this to start to heal is to clip the nail where it has broken. It will hurt, but once it is gone, your pup will actually feel much more comfortable. In my office, we clip really fast & then bandage the foot with an antibiotic cream that contains lidocaine. This numbs the nerve & allows things to heal quite nicely. While this is technically not an emergency, it is also a situation that you do not want to ignore, either. Most veterinary clinics are open to some degree. They may not allow pet parents into the hospital, but will meet you in the parking lot to take your pet inside for treatment. I would start calling around to see who is available to help with this.
