My dog's Trazodone not helping storm anxiety. Can I increase dose?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Female | spayed | 7 years and 5 months old | 65 lbs

Bailey is prescribed 100mg Trazadone to help with anxiety during thunderstorms. She’s been on it for about a year and it seems to be losing the little effect it had to begin with. Currently, we are currently getting hit with a 7 hour stretch and the 100 mg isn’t touching her and our vet is closed. What is the max dose we can give her to calm her down? It is torture to see her this worked up. She is 7 years old, 67 pounds, and in good health otherwise.

100mg is the appropriate dose for a dog her size. You can administer up to another 100mg but there could be adverse side effects. Trazodone is not a strong anti-anxiety medication and she may need something stronger like alprazolam in the future.
