My dog found a vape coil. Is nicotine poisonous and dangerous?

Hey there this is Nicki. Pico (border collie poodle) or Nova (chihuahua) got into the trash while I was asleep and pulled out two paper towels with my vape coil in it. I saw it laying on the floor when I got up. (Vape coil is the used coil from my ecig vape that has used coil soaked into the cotton of it). Idk if either of them licked it or chewed on it or anything but I was reading that nicotine is poisonous to dogs. Should I be worried? Attached is a photo of the coil.

Hi Nicki! Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question. This is concerning because nicotine is toxic to dogs. Since you aren't sure if they ingested any or not, I'd keep an eye on them for now. If you see tremors, constricted pupils, drooling, excitement, vomiting, diarrhea, seizures, a racing heart rate, or twitching, take them into a vet immediately. Typically signs of toxicity occur within one hour. I hope this helps!

You are correct that vape pens are dangerous to dogs due to the chemicals in it such as nicotine. Nicotine is absorbed quickly and can be extremely toxic, even in small doses. The most common symptoms of poisoning in dogs are drooling, puking, diarrhea, lethargy, and seizures. If you see any of those signs in Dexter, take him into a vet immediately. Your sister should not do allow him to smell that vape pen or lick it even again, it's not safe. I hope this helps.

If she ingested 16 mg of nicotine, that would potentially be below what we would consider toxic, but every dog is different. If Hollie develops any agitation, vomiting, drooling, or any other abnormal clinical signs, please seek emergency veterinary care immediately. Good luck! My dog ate a cigarette bud this morning that was laying in the grass outside. It has been raining, so hopefully the nicotine has washed out of it. I was researching nicotine poisoning and was wondering if I should be concerned or see if it passes.
Hi, nicotine toxicity has a quite rapid onset with symptoms displaying with an hour from ingestion. If Tiller has eaten the cigarette a few hours ago and has not displayed any symptoms, I think he should be fine, just keep an eye on what comes out the other end over the next 2-3 days. If Tiller has vomited or seems unwell, i.e. wobbly, shaking, or with a fast abnormal heart rate or breathing, I would recommend to have him checked over. Hope this helps ! My dog broke apart 2 cigarettes but it doesn't look like she ate a lot. What should I be watching for? Should I get her checked?
Good on you for reaching out for help and information! The toxic level of nicotine in dogs is 5 milligrams of nicotine per pound of body weight. In dogs, 10 mg/kg is potentially lethal. One cigarette contains 15 to 25 milligrams of nicotine depending on the brand. So two cigarettes would contain 30-50mg of nicotine. That means if your dog weighs 30kg (66lbs), she would have potentially consumed 1mg/kg to 1.67mg/kg. If she weighs 5kg (11lbs), she would have potentially consumed 6mg/kg-10mg/kg (potentially lethal dose). I'm not sure how much your dog weighs, but if she is a larger dog (over 50lbs), she likely did not consume enough to be toxic. The signs of toxicity are dose-dependent and generally begin within one hour of ingestion. Many dogs will vomit naturally after ingestion. I would monitor her for now. Watch out for tremors, weakness, stumbling, lethargy, drooling, vomiting, diarrhea, or difficulty breathing. If you see any of these signs, get Kai into your vet right away.

Good question. Look for tremors, drooling, constricted pupils, diarrhea, seizures, and an increased heart rate. Typically symptoms of nicotine poisoning occur within one hour of ingestion, but I'd watch him tonight to be safe. Hello, I recommend that your dog is seen by a veterinarian to induce vomiting. If you cannot reach a veterinarian soon, I would administer 2 tablespoons of hydrogen peroxide by mouth to induce vomiting while you make your way to the ER. Nicotine can cause abnormal heart rhythms and the toxicity depends on how much nicotine is in each cigarette. Hope this helps.

I estimate that it would be enough chocolate to cause a mild to moderate reaction. Signs of a mild reaction is hyperactivity. Further signs of toxicity can be vomiting, tremors and seizures. If you notice any of these signs, then it's best to take Toby to a vet for treatment/monitoring, because chocolate toxicity can be deadly. Nicotine toxicity will have similar signs and again it's best to take him to a vet if there is any concern. Unfortunately, there is not much that can be done at home for this. It's best to make sure he has plenty of water and that you check him every two hours for any signs of toxicity. If he is not showing any signs after 12 hours, then I would not worry him having toxic effects. I hope that helps and Toby gets through this fine.

If your pups are doing great today, yes, you should be in the clear. Symptoms of nicotine usually show up quite quickly (within the first couple hours), and if the pet is doing well 12 hours later typically we've got a really good prognosis. Hello, and thanks for using Boop by Petco. If it was just a couple licks, then the dose of caffeine Niko got would be pretty small and I wouldn’t induce intervene. If he drank a more significant amount then I recommend contacting Pet Poison Helpline to better quantify and assess how much caffeine he actually consumed. From your description it sounds like a pretty small amount - but if you perceive it was more than a couple licks, it’s worth getting guidance from the toxicology experts. There is a $65 fee to start a consultation with Pet Poison, but that’s far less than you’d spend rushing him in to an emergency vet, and they very likely may advise you that his caffeine exposure was small enough not to be of concern. Since the cold brew is liquid, it may be too late to get out of his system even if you induced vomiting, so the question at this point is likely whether you should watch for development of symptoms or whether the exposure is high enough to warrant preemptive hospitalizat
