My dog's spay incision is red and discharging. Is it normal?

Pet's info: Dog | Lhasa Apso | Female | spayed | 3 years and 8 months old | 10 lbs

We just spayed my Lhasa Apso (3 yr 8mo) and I’m a bit concerned on her incision site. We only spayed her yesterday and her incision has looked the same as when they gave her back to us. She’s acting okay, sluggish, but still drinking water, eating, although has not been to the restroom. It seems like the incision is bothersome which seems normal but I just want to make sure this is okay? Again this is only the second day post op and how she was given back to us

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Bella. It is bit red and there is some discharge around it, but you did just get it done yesterday. It will take time for her to heal. Based on the redness, I would get it checked out by the vet to be safe. I hope this helps!

Hello and welcome to Boop by Petco. The incision looks inflammed, but this could be part of the normal healing process. If there is any discharge, OR if the wound looked better than this previously and is now looking MORE red than say Friday or Saturday, I would take her back to the vet right away. If it is steadily looking better, and she is eating, drinking, pooping and peeing normally, then you can continue to monitor it. Best of luck with Lilo.

Lina had a spay/gastropexy one week ago. The incision today looks more red/scabby. Just making sure this is normal. The photos are in order of earliest to present
Thank you for contacting Boop by Petco with your question about Lina. Unfortunately only one picture is attached, and I think it may be the earliest picture given your description in the question. If the incision looks more red and scabby, that suggests infection. I would have her seen by a vet first thing in the morning to get it checked out to be safe. I hope this helps!

A little bit of discharge is normal but continue to monitor the incision and if the discharge persists or gets worse then she should be examined by a vet. She may need an antibiotic to treat an infection. Also monitor for redness and/or swelling. Make sure she is not licking the incision as this will inhibit healing.

Is my dogs spayed incision infected?
Thanks for using Boop by Petco! Panda's spay incision does appear to be red and a little swollen. Swelling at a spay site can be due to a variety of reasons, including infection, inflammation from a reaction to the suture material, or over-activity after her procedure, among others. I would recommend Panda be seen by her regular veterinarian to have the swelling evaluated, and start any medications (antibiotic, anti-inflammatory) that she may need. In the meantime, I would recommend icing the area as well. Good luck!

Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! Lena needs to have an examination by a veterinarian as soon as you can to ensure the incision remains closed. In the picture, it appears there is some inflammation next to the incision. This is likely due to irritation to the area, and she may be licking at the incision and making the inflammation worst. If she is licking it, it could even cause infection or make an existing infection worse. I would recommend an Elizabethan collar to be fitted on Lena to make sure she is not able to lick the area until fully healed. The lack of appetite is very concerning which makes her case in more urgent need of attention by a veterinarian. It may be nothing serious yet, but it is better to get on top of these things early to keep them from becoming a larger issue. Hope this helps and that Lena gets better!

Just noticed the end of her incision has started to scab and it’s a little red, should we get it checked or just let it heal on it’s own? The stitch on that area has been removed already a few days ago. She doesn’t bother it either.
Hello, and thanks for using Boop by Petco. It looks like that one focal area at the end of her spay incision is red, inflamed, and getting crusty. I definitely recommend having your vet take another look to make sure it's not getting infected, especially since that one spot looks dramatically different from the rest of the incision line (which appears to be healing nicely). Thank you for contacting Boop by Petco with your question about Ottoom. I see what you mean, it does look a little red. The healing process should have been over after 14 days post surgery. This is now part of the healing process, this is a new issue. It could be a skin infection or she may have irritated the area by licking it. You need to have her seen by a vet, and I'd take her into one on Monday. I hope this helps!

Luna was spayed 7/31/18. As of today 8/4/18, this is what the area looks like. There is some fluid that came out of the hole and a little bit of blood. Is this normal?
Hi and thanks for posting! I think the actual spay incision which appears to be the green line below the area of concern (green die is used sometimes to tattoo them) looks very good. The area above this looks like there is some blood and redness from perhaps a scratch or puncture wound. It is a little hard to tell from the picture. I would recommend you can take some mild soap and water and clean the area a bit to see exactly where the blood in coming from. If the area continues to have discharge or blood coming from it, I would have Luna seen by her veterinarian. Typically spay incisions should not bleed or have a lot of discharge. Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! The only thing I can't tell from the picture is if the skin is together at the red area. If it is then I think it is fine. The red area appears to be a scab or dried blood that will likely heal. Just be sure she isn't licking the incision (use an E-collar or T-shirt) and that you are keeping her exercise restricted (no running, jumping, stairs and leash walks outside only). Good luck!

Our 6 month old labradoodle had her spay on Friday she seems ok but I checked the site today and there appears to be dry yellowish stuff around the part of the site I can't see any bleeding or fluid or pus
Thanks for using Boop by Petco! This is probably ok for now though it does indicate that there was some discharge and potentially an infection. I would recommend that you keep a very close eye on the incision site. If you notice any active discharge (moist instead of dry), bleeding or pain, have her evaluated as soon as possible to make sure it is not an active infection. Keep the area clean for now. If no more discharge is noted, it is possible that it will heal completely on its own. Good luck and have a nice day!
