Is it normal for a newborn puppy's eyes to be sealed shut at 5 days?

We rescued a newborn puppy 5 days ago and her eyes are still obviously closed. We know that dogs can’t open their eyes within 2 weeks but her eyes seem to be sealed shut? I don’t know if all newborn puppies eyes are sealed shut and if this is normal

Yes, they can appear to be sealed shut, and it take take between 2-3 weeks of age of them to open their eye. As long as there is no discharge coming from her eyes, it's likely normal. I have 8 17 day old puppies they all have their eyes open. A hour ago I noticed one of the puppies had her eyes shut, she will open them if she hears a loud noise, but other than that she keeps them shut. Should I be worried???
If she is nursing well and alert otherwise then it is less concerning and would point more to an eye injury or infection (conjunctivitis) which will need treatment. If she is weak and not wanting to nurse or interact then she needs to be seen by a vet immediately.m to see what is going on. Make sure she is kept warm and you can gentle clean her eyes with sterile eye wash. If you see any redness, mucus or cloudiness to the eye then it is best she get seen by a vet

My puppy hasn't opened her eyes yet an it's like tears coming out of them well I'm not sure if it's tears but it's clear is that bad?
It depends on how this puppy was delivered. If she was born by C-section and the surgery was done a bit before full term, it may take a few days more for her to open her eyes. However, the discharge is a bit concerning, as it may indicate a problem with the developing eyes. I would get this checked by your vet right away.

My 15 days labrador has not opened eyes yet !!what to do ?(ps- he is not with his mother)
You can try bathing very gently with cooled, boiled saline and cotton wool but do not pull or pry them open. It is not impossible for pups to be born with no or deformed eyes and a full vet check would be recommended if not opening within the next 72hours

my chichuahua is 2 weeks old and still hasnt opened his eyes
Some pets can be a bit delayed. As long as there is no current crust or discharge around the eyelids, I would consider waking up to another week. If you notice discharge or if puppy still hasn't opened his eyes by 3 weeks, then it's best to have him evaluated by your vet to make sure no congenital defects are affecting his eyes. I have a 11 day old chihuaha weighing 3ozs. She was only pup. She is female. Mamas milk has dried up I'm am suplimenting formula but she is bad dehydrated and eyes are not open
Puppies’ eyes usually do not open until about 14 days of age. At 11 days of age, Baby girl would need to be bottle fed Puppy Milk Replacer at least every 2 hours until about 6 weeks of age, and stimulated to urinate/defecated several times a day with a hypoallergenic baby wipe in the genital area (mother dogs usually stimulate their pups to urinate, defecate by licking them down there). I recommend bringing the puppy to your veterinarian for an evaluation as young puppies are extremely susceptible to hypothermia and hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), in addition to dehydration if not fed every 2 hours. They may recommend subcutaneous fluids and possibly offer medical day boarding where their techs can feed Baby girl for you while you are at work (likely pricey though for several weeks). Good luck!

What if my puppy never opens his eyes, what do i do? How do i care for a blind puppy?
Eyelids in puppies typically open between 10-14 days of age, and I can see that Pumpkin Pie is just past that point at 17 days. At this point, his eyes may simply be opening later than normal, or may have a congenital or infectious issue occurring. It would be best to take him to a vet (or ideally, a veterinary ophthalmologist) for further evaluation. If he does have a congenital issue leading to blindness, there are plenty of dogs that happy, full lives without sight. It just takes some dedication, consistency in training/routine, and extra caution around new people and children. Give it more time before worrying about having a blind dog! :-) I hope that all goes well for Pumpkin Pie!

Hello, my puppies are 12 days old and one of them opened her eyes yesterday. The only issue is that her eyes are black, is this considered normal/okay. This is my first time having newborns, so I'm slightly over concerned. Thank you.
Eye color in puppies this young can be very variable, sometimes appearing completely black when first opening. The eye color is likely to change as they grow older and into their own. As long as you do not see any discharge or cloudiness associated with the eyes, the color should not be something to be concerned with. Just make sure all the other puppy's eyes are opening relatively soon and look relatively normal. Good luck with your pups!

Hopefully last question of the day. One of my puppies(17 days old) are keeping their eyes closed. She will open them sometimes, when there is a loud noise. She is eating great and acting normal, my question is can I use similasan to see if that helps
Hello, she may still be working on opening her eyes on her own and is just a little slower than the rest of the clan. I would not recommend putting anything in her eyes as it could be detrimental to any condition she may have. If she does not open her eyes readily or of she develops any discharge, scratches at her face, is not eating or drinking, then I would have her evaluated by a veterinarian. Why Is My 3-Week-Old Puppy Not Opening His Eyes?
Some puppies will open their eyes later than other puppies. If there is no discharge from the eyes, mucus or matting over the eyelids, it seem like the muscles around the eyes 'blink' even though his eyes are not open, and he's eating and otherwise thriving, he may just be slow to open his eyes. If you see any of the signs I mentioned above, there is a medical reason behind why he isn't opening his eyes, and you need to take him into your vet.

Rain had a pup c section 17 days ago. Rain rejected it so I'm feeding it. eyes haven't opened yet and ears just starting to. Should they be open now
A puppy's eye should start opening around one to two weeks of age, and are usually fully open around three weeks of age. If the puppy's eyes aren't open by three weeks of age, I would take it into the vet for an exam. Do not try to open it's eyes yourself.
