My puppy is scooting. Can I safely give another tapeworm dose?

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund miniature | Female | unspayed | 3 months and 6 days old | 6 lbs

My puppy was given praziquantel for a tapeworm, she was suppose to take her follow up dose after 10 days. However we aren’t sure if she ate it or if the other dog ate it. Now she’s scooting her butt again. Is it safe to give her another dose??

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Maeve. Praziquantel is a pretty safe drug and if you aren't sure she ate it, you can give her another dose now. Just make sure she does eat it. I hope this helps!

None of the products you have administered will treat for tapeworms. Tapeworms need to be treated with a special dewormer called Praziquantel. You can give it now. So my puppy got her tape worm pill a couple of days ago and I didn’t know she did because my dad gave it to her and I gave her another one can it hurt her?
Hi and thanks for posting on Boop by Petco. Generally speaking the active ingredients in most of these dewormers for dogs have a very wide margin of safety so giving another dose by accident is not likely to cause any significant issues.

I have tried these medications for tapeworms for my 4 month old puppy , she is approximately 9 1/2 pounds. But she still has tapeworms. She is an inside dog and does not have fleas. I dont know what else to do. Thank You.
Hello. There have been some reports of drug resistance with tapeworms. I would talk to your vet about either upping the dose of the praziquantel or trying an alternate drug called epsiprantal. And make sure your vet sees a stool sample containing the tapeworm segments just to make sure there is not something else going on. Thanks for using Boop by Petco.

Thanks for using Boop by Petco! Roundworms do take multiple doses of dewormer usually given every 2-3 weeks but it is a safe medication to give sooner. It is usually given 0.1mL per pound (so 0.5mL for 5 lbs). Kisses to Powder!

Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! If the first medication was only for round worms and wasn't broad spectrum (gets tapeworm too) then you can give a 2nd dewormer that JUST gets tape worms. I hope this helps and I wish Babycakes the best!

Hello. There are wormers available over the counter that will take care of tapeworms. Make sure the product contains the ingredient praziquantel, or you can pick up SafeGuard canine wormer at Petco. Puppies and kittens need a series of repeated deworming medications. And even if they have been dewormed, it is common for them to have other intestinal parasites since there are so many different types of parasites and they each require a specific type of deworming. What you are describing is likely tapeworms, so hopefully the tapeworm medication will work. I am including more information about tapeworms below. https://veterinarypartner.vin.com/default.aspx?pid=19239&id=4951442 Since tapeworms are transmitted by fleas, you will also need to make sure that Ariel doesn't have fleas or she may have tapeworms again. I would also make sure that your veterinarian has checked a fecal sample on her to see if there are any other microscopic intestinal parasites that need to be treated, but may require a different type of dewormer. Hi, the looks like the proglottis of tapeworms.I would recommend praziquantel for deworming but also you need to treat him for fleas as the two parasites go hand in hand. For the time being you could buy a Praziquantel dewormer and when you see your vet discuss ongoing care. Hope this helps !

I saw segments of tapeworms in my dog's stool. Treated with praziprantel combo for 4 kinds of worms otc 2gm powder x3 days . Finished 2 days ago. Today i still see segments on her stool not alot but still see them. Should i repeat. She is 32 lbs pupp
I'm a bit confused by the description of the medication you used, as I'm not familiar with an over-the-counter powder praziquantel medication, and typically I give praziquantel for tapeworms as a single (tablet) dose, which in some cases is repeated several weeks later if needed. The product that is typically given as a powder daily for 3 consecutive days is Panacur, with an active ingredient of Fenbendazole, which only gets select species of tapeworms. So, a few thoughts to answer your questions. No, I would not recommend re-dosing if you just finished treatment 2 days ago. Sometimes it can take a few days for the parasites to be expelled from the system, and I wouldn't typically re-treat until at least 2 weeks later. Keep monitoring Buffy and see if those tapeworm segments continue to decrease, or if you still see them a week or two from now. Additionally, dogs tend to get tapeworms from ingesting fleas, so make sure Buffy is treated with an effective flea preventative. F
