Why is my dog's eye red and swollen? Does he need a vet visit?

Thank ou for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Benny. Poor boy. He could have injured his eye or have a severe eye infection. Any eye problem needs to be checked out by a vet promptly as leaving it untreated can lead to vision loss. I'd take him into a vet asap. I hope this helps!

    In this case a picture would be essential to be able to give you a specific answer. Generally speaking, taking from your description, this is likely to be due to a mild to moderate conjunctivitis, probably secondary to a trauma or infection.

    Luna is probably suffering from an eye infection or from an eye injury (could be a scratch on the cornea) you will need to take her to the vet ASAP in order to get the eye checked properly, then the vet will prescribe Luna an eye drops (probably an antibiotic eye drops).

    Ouch! Your pup needs to be examined today by the veterinarian. The most likely causes are a scratch to the cornea, a foreign object trapped under the lid or a tear in the conjunctiva. It like hurts and also make sure your pup is wearing an elizabethan collar at all times. Scratching the eye can make it worse. Have her examined today.

This is concerning and could be due to conjunctivitis as you pointed out though other possibilities such as a foreign body reaction, corneal ulcer or laceration or even inflammation of the periocular structures could also be going on. Regardless, this does warrant a visit to your veterinarian as soon as possible as he is likely painful. They would be able to examine his eye closely and start therapy based on findings. Dog's eye is red and drooping
Poor Benny! The redness and drooping of his eye could be due to an eye infection, injury to his eye, or allergies. The eye is such a delicate and important structure that any problem with it is an emergency. That's because leaving it untreated can lead to vision loss. I would get Benny into a vet asap, no later than tomorrow, so that the vet can examined and diagnose his eye so it can be treated. Good luck, I hope this helps!

My dogs left eye is swollen
Hello and thank you for contacting Boop by Petco. Swelling of one eye only suggests traumatic episode. It could be self-inflicted trauma from excessive scratching, or it may be a blunt injury from walking into something or being scratched by another animal. As there is a risk of damage to the cornea, I would suggest you to take Cooper to your local vets today to fully examine the eye and to get treatment for him.

Got home from work and both my dogs eyes are swollen almost shut. When he slightly opens them it looks as though hes not looking straight or they are lazy. Seems sluggish maybe a little sick

Any eye problem is considered an emergency because leaving it untreated can lead to vision loss. I would take him into a vet immediately to get treated. Best of luck.

Dogs eye is red and swollen. Giving him benedryl. Is this more than an allergy?
This looks like conjunctivitis. The benadryl should reduce the itching but I recommend a veterinary exam to check for a corneal ulcer and get eye medication to reduce the swelling and prevent infection. I always recommend an exam and treatment with eye problems since they can sometimes cause permanent vision problems. Thanks for using Boop by Petco to help you care for Jake.

Hi I came home last night from work and my dogs eye was completely swollen, bloodshot red and he is unable to shut his eye, I went to the vet but I had to pay $98 in order for them to see him but I don’t have that right now . I just need to know what
Hi there and thank you for using Boop by Petco to address your concern. From the picture, it appears that the eye is much large than the left eye, indicating either trauma to the eye or a disease such as glaucoma. I suspect this is likely due to trauma. He may have fallen while at home and hit his head or ran into something and his eye is now wanting to fall out of the socket. I would recommend applying cool and warm compress to the eye to help take down some of the inflammation and placing a plastic cone around his neck so that he does not further traumatize the eye. I would recommend getting him in to see a veterinarian right away when you can so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. I hope this helps! I would also recommend giving Well and Good Buffered Aspirin for Dogs (can find at Petco). We have an appointment with Jack’s doctor in the morning but I’d love a Boop by Petco opinion before hand! Jack has been treated for reoccurring clostridium. He’ll take an antibiotic, it will clear up, and days or a couple of weeks later, it’s back.

However, there are some other diseases that really need a very thorough evaluation of the eye to diagnose. I think that if he has not improved on the current therapy, it may be a good idea to check in with your veterinarian. If they are concerned based on their knowledge of his case, they could consider having you consult with a veterinary ophthalmologist. My dog he has red in he's eyes
Ouch! The diagnosis will depend on where in the eye that he is red. The eyelids and conjunctiva can get red with allergies, foreign object or corneal ulcer. The white part (sclera) can get red secondary to trauma or diseases such as glaucoma. The inside of the eye can get red with high blood pressure or coagulopathy ( bleeding problem). The best thing for him would be an exam by a veterinarian. They can do some diagnostics to Check eye pressures, tear levels and check for ulcers.
