Help! My puppy won't walk on a leash for potty breaks. Any tips?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Boxer | Female | unspayed | 3 months and 23 days old

I have a 16 week old female boxer, we are trying to potty train her and have been since we got her. She won't walk on the leash. We tried a harness and a collar nothing works. She just stands there. We try without a leash and she runs off. We have tried taking the treats out with her and it doesn't work. Any tips on getting her potty trained or walking on the leash will greatly be appreciated. Thanks in advanced!

Leash training puppies should be done slowly and utilize positive reinforcement. Begin by attaching the leash to your puppy’s collar inside your home and allow the puppy to drag the leash around. Encourage your pet to walk around by offering treats and play toys. Once the puppy is fine dragging around the leash, begin to pick up the end of the leash and follow the puppy around. Again, make this fun! Once the puppy is ok with this, begin to give direction. This should all be done in the home until Meyah is comfortable. Then move it outside to the back yard where she is also comfortable. Keep this all positive and fun. Make sure the training sessions are in a safe, distraction free area (like inside the house or the back yard). Keep the sessions short and positive. It's also important Meyah not be afraid of being outside. In a secured area, play with her and keep the experiences outside and fun. This will help her to feel more comfortable. Please feel free to post any additional questions.
