Good day. My BF has a yellow lab ,3 yrs , from a breeder, who told him there was no real benefit to have him fixed. I have a female dog , fixed (and 2 cats). I am trying to convince him otherwise, not just for the sake of my couch cushions, but for his dog. Any suggestions? Thank you

Thank you for submitting your question. Neutering will decrease his desire to roam and look for female dogs. More importantly, it decreases his risk of certain prostate disease and eliminates the possibility of testicular cancer. The prostate will grow over time in an intact male dog. In some cases, this can cause difficulty urinating. If so, surgery can be needed on an emergency basis. I hope this information helps!

Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to address your concern. Neutering will help reduce the risk of prostate problems and the development of testicular tumors, which can be cancerous but are typically benign. While he does not have to be neutered, it will certainly help reduce the risk of these occurring. Neutering does not cause any personality changes typically and is a very safe and simple surgical procedure. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction. Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns and I would be more than happy to help you further.
