My dog ate chocolate granola, vomiting & bloated. What should I do?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 12 lbs

I have a 2 year old mix breed( maltise/Yorkie dog. In the afternoon she a small bag of chocolate granola. She it’s vomiting not with diarrhea, she is alert moving and playful. I am worried because she has a distended abdomen but at palpation she doesn’t reflect pain but just a little disconfort. What do you recommend?

It could be this granola has upset her stomach causing the bloating, and it can take up to 24 hours for signs of chocolate toxicity to show. Keep a close eye on her and if you see vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, a loss of appetite, or muscle tremors, have her seen by a vet right away. Best of luck.

GI upset is a common symptom of chocolate ingestion and toxicity. In order to know if the dose of chocolate she received is toxic the type of choclate needs to be known (milk, dark, etc.). Some types contain more of the concerning toxin then others. Symptoms typically start 6 to 12 hours after ingestion so this timing is a bit delayed so the vomiting may also be unrelated. But, given the history, your pet should be seen by a veterinarian today to calculate the chocolate dose, investigate the vomiting, and get her feeling better. I can understand being scared! It's good the Koko has stopped vomiting and having diarrhea for now, and I would continue to monitor her. Vomiting and diarrhea are signs of chocolate toxicity, but hopefully she is done being sick. You can try a home remedy to see if that helps settle her stomach, but if it doesn't help, she will need to see a vet. Withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet. If the vomiting continues in the absence of food, she vomits the bland diet, she has diarrhea on the bland diet, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, she will need to see a vet right away.

Thanks for using Boop by Petco! That is not a toxic dose of chocolate for Lucy. If she’s acting off there could be something else going on- a stomach bug, foreign body, something else she got into. If you are concerned about her I would take her to a vet for an exam and possibly blood work and xrays. They can also give her medications to calm her stomach if needed. Good luck and kisses to Lucy!

If the vomiting continues than you should call your vet and let him/her know. Your vet may want to prescribe an anti-vomiting medication, antacid, and/or gastrointestinal protectant. Your vet may also want to repeat bloodwork to make sure her values are still normal.

Thanks for using Boop by Petco! Sorry to hear that. How affected Nova will be depends on how much chocolate there is in those granola bars. If it is just the typical granola bar that only contains a few chips then she is likely going to be ok but again would depend on the amount. If this happened recently within the last 2 hours, there is still time to induce vomiting. You can always contact ASPCS animal poison center to let them know exactly how much chocolate there is which will depend on the type of bars (let them know the kind). I can give you a home remedy for him to see if that helps. Withhold food tonight, then in the morning feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. If the vomiting continues in the absence of food, he refuses to eat the bland diet, he vomits the bland diet, develops diarrhea, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, he will need to see a vet right away. My 6 month old Boston Terrier just ate a gronala bar with chocolate chips in it what should I do?
I think it will be ok. It may cause vomiting and diarrhea from the increase in sugar, and if that lasts for longer than 24 hours then Thor should get checked out by the vet for dehydration and treatment.

The good news is that white chocolate isn't toxic to dogs, but it does cause GI upset which you are seeing. The same for the sugar. I can give a home remedy to see if that helps. Thank you for submitting your question regarding Ralph. I recommend that he sees a veterinarian today. That is a large amount of chocolate to consume and it is obviously affecting him. Not only can dogs suffer toxic effects from chocolate, but pancreatitis can occur as well. He needs to be examined and determine how best to treat him. I hope this information helps!
