My senior cat is underweight, eats a lot, and has a hacking cough. Help!

Question

We have a senior male cat who was very overweight when we got him. He is now very underweight, you can feel all of his bones, but he eats a lot. He also has a weezing/hacking cough that acts up a couple times a day, it started about 3-4 months ago. My mom is scared of taking him to a vet, because she doesn't want him put down. You have to take Phat to a vet asap. It's very serious that he has a wheezing/hacking cough and has lost a lot of weight. He sounds very sick, and not getting him veterinary care is cruel to him. Please take him into a vet now.
