My cat keeps coughing. Could it be asthma even with clear X-rays?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Norwegian Forest Cat | Male | neutered | 9 years and 5 months old | 15 lbs

taken cat in 4-5 times for cough 3 mths, put under for tests as he won’t cooperate. Found high ALT and a bit low PLT. Given supplements for high ALT. No allergies found, no other noticeable issues in X-rays. Also got sent home with trachial dilator and steroids to start a week after I stop using fragrances in the house, which she recommended for now. Live in Japan, vet hard to understand still as I’m learning Japanese but not enough yet. What other possibilities could this be? Didn’t think asthma

Asthma is probably the most likely cause of his symptoms. There should have been some changes in the lungs noted on the x-rays however, that is not always the case. Some cats will have normal x-rays. I think the treatment plan is reasonable. If there is no change on the medications then you will need to look for other underlying issues but I bet he will respond. Here is a link to a good article about feline asthma for you to review. If you have any other questions please feel free to post again. Take care!
