My dog was bitten by another dog, vet closed. Can I wait until Monday?

My dog Storm got bites from the neighbors dog. The Veterinarian is closed until Monday. Is it safe to wait a day?

It depends on how deep the bites are and how severe they are. Dog bites frequently become infected, and are painful. It's best to take Storm into a vet now. If the neighbor's dog bit him unprovoked, they should help pay for the veterinary care.

Hi! I am so sorry to hear that Roscoe is injured! The wound appears to be inflamed and as dog bites or any deep wound often become infected. I recommend taking him to your vet in the next 24 hours, sooner if he seems to feel poorly or if he has other wounds. They will likely clip the hair, clean the wound and see how extensive it is. If they think it necessary, they will recommend antibiotics and/or pain/swelling medication. Keep an eye on it after you visit to ensure it heals appropriately and he does not lick at it. I hope this is helpful and he feels better soon!

Ouch! If your vet is not open and the wound is very bad or painful, I would see if they have an emergency line you can call for an on-call vet or direction to an ER clinic near you. Otherwise, I would try to keep the wound as clean and dry as possible, stop any bleeding with pressure, and place an Elizabethan (cone) collar on Tonny until you can be seen by your vet in the morning.

How bad is his would? He was attacked Thursday morning by my neighbors pit and can't really walk much....
I would have to examine this wound in-person to tell the extent, but it does appear like a deep wound that should be treated by a veterinarian. Bite wounds tend to develop infections very quickly and can have severe consequences if not treated appropriately. For now, I recommend flushing the wound using a syringe or other dispensing device with warm water for five minutes. This may not be easy, because dogs tend to hate this, so I recommend having someone help you with holding Wolfy to make sure the wound gets flushed well. Infection is the biggest concern with these wounds; so after flushing, it's best to apply an antibacterial cream to the wound. In order to keep the wound clean, it's best to flush the wound two times a day and gently wipe away any big crusts - make sure not to scrub the wound, because this can make it worse. Apply the antibacterial cream after each flushing. I recommend taking him to the vet within the next 24 hours for treatment. I hope that helps and W

My dog was bitten by our other dog this evening. She isn’t bleeding anymore but the wound is open. What should I do?
Poor Gracie! Depending on the size and depth of the wound, it may need to be stitched shut. She will also need antibiotics to prevent infection. In this case, I think it's best that she is seen by a vet right away. The vet can stitch the wound if needed, can check her for any internal damage from the bite, and can prescribe antibiotics as needed. I recommend taking her into a vet now. Best of luck.

Poor guy. Bite wounds often are left open in small areas to allow the infection to drain out before it then heals over by 2nd intention healing. I would only suggest covering this with a loose t-shirt for now. As long as there are no signs of infection (yellow or purulent discharge with a foul odor) and no large gaping openings (typically >2 cm), then it should be ok to wait until Monday to get him checked again by your vet. Based on the picture I don't see any majorly open wounds there. You can safely flush this area with sterile saline from your local pharmacy to help keep infection at bay since the wounds are slightly open. But again, dog bite woulds can be left often for the first few days to allow draining to occur before things heal up on their own with granulation tissue that the body will make itself. My pet was injured by another dog while playing.
This is a quite deep injury and underlying tissues seem exposed. A stitch up and antibiotics are needed. Disinfection may be started at home with very diluted hibiscrub or betadine or salted water baths. Buster collar may be useful as well to avoid any licking (if any). He probably got bitten by either a snake or an insect, the swelling is very severe you need to try and find a vet clinic that provide out of hours service today as he might not survive, especially if it is a snake bite.

Hello and thank you for reaching out to Boop by Petco. I'm so sorry to hear about Darby, I can imagine that was very scary for both of you! I would recommend having Darby seen by a veterinarian as soon as you can. Dog bite wounds can be very extensive, beyond what you can see on the surface. There can be significant soft tissue injury that you cannot see, and a wound that looks like a small puncture can actually have deep pocketing and tissue damage. Also, dog bite wounds are very prone to becoming infected, as the bacteria in a dog's mouth can infect your dog's skin and prevent the wounds from healing. Your veterinarian will likely want to sedate Darby so he/she can clip the hair around the wounds and clean them out. Based on Darby's physical exam, your veterinarian may also recommend x-rays to look for evidence of other trauma, such as lung contusions (bruises) or fractures. Thank you for submitting your question regarding Reese. I definitely recommend that he sees a veterinarian this weekend when you are able. He appears to a deep wound. He will likely need the hair shaved around the area to better investigate the opening. Oral antibiotics and a cleansing solution will likely be needed as well. In the meantime, place an E-collar on him so that he does not lick the area. Any time the dogs are unsupervised, they will need to be kept separate. The dog other licking the wound will make it worse. Be sure to keep the area clean and dry. I hope this information helps!

My dogs got into a fight yesterday over a toy. One of my dogs bit the other and there is a small wound from a tooth and it’s a little deep. There is swelling too. He’s limping a little but seems like it’s not bothering him as much as it did yesterday
Poor Zeus! A major concern is that it the wound becomes infected, especially if the bite penetrated the joint. You could clean the area with a wound wash but he really should be examined by a vet. Your vet can determine the extent of the injury and prescribe an antibiotic to help prevent an infection. He might also need an anti-inflammatory to help with the pain and swelling. Please do not give any human OTC pain relievers as they can be toxic to dogs. If you can't take him to a vet then keep cleaning the area with a wound wash and monitor for increased swelling, discharge, pain, and fever.
