My dog has fleas and is still itching. Will Frontline Homegard help?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | neutered | 11 lbs

Does frontline homegard work well? IT seems to be the only thing available in Egypt, where I am living. I am dealing with early stages of flea infestation and trying to see what is best to do. I've put his bedding to wash, vaccumed carpet and couch area and applied Frontline spray yesterday (frontline spot on is not available here). I still see him itching. I will ask my vet here, but am wondering what you recommend I do? Any home remedies that have worked?

Frontline homegard can work well, I'd use it. Unfortunately home remedies do not work. The Frontline spray will be best until you can speak to your vet about flea treatment options available in Egypt.

You could talk to your vet about switching from frontline to Nexgard. Also, if he has any skin lesions, he may need additional medications to treat. He may need an antibiotic, anti-histamine, corticosteroid, or other medications to control the itching. It would be best to call your vet and schedule a recheck examination.

Frontline unfortunately is not a good flea treatment, as it is not working anymore in many cases. Here is a list of good quality flea (and ticks) treatment. Spot ons: Revolution, Advantage, Advantage Multi, Bravecto spot on (ticks as well). A good house spray would be Indoorex. Hello. I am so sorry for your worries about the fleas, but it is illegal to prescribe any medications without first doing an in-person physical examination on your pet. So, you will need to see your regular vet about this. There are, however, several things you can still do at home to combat the fleas. One is to add either Capstar, an oral tablet that you can give once a day, week or as often as necessary to kill fleas. The other is to try a Seresto collar. These really work very well & both my options can be used with the Frontline. You also need to treat your home with sprays or bombs that contain an insect growth regulator, & treat your yard as well. There are many very good products out there to combat fleas. It is not often a one time treatment as it can take up to 3 months to eliminate all the living generations of fleas in your vicinity. Safe to use flea shampoo after using frontline with no results
Frontline doesn't always work unfortunately, but a flea shampoo is not likely to give you a better result. Instead I recommend using Advantage or Advocate spot on, Alternatively a comfortis tablet will do an excellent job as well. Do not bath her at least 3 days before and after you apply any spot on. As these flea treatment do not contain the same active ingredients as the frontline, they are safe to use at anytime you chose.

If you have a flea infestation, home remedies like Adam's flea spray will not be successful. I would recommend talking to your vet about an oral flea medication like Bravecto, Nexgard, or Comfortis. These are very effective and can start killing fleas in 30 minutes. I would also recommend vacuuming all carpeted areas in your house and washing all of the pet's bedding. Even with the best flea control (like those mentioned above) it can take up to 2-3 months to get the flea problem under control. Make sure you treat all the other pets in the household as well. Additinally it sounds like your dog has a skin infection that will need to be treated as well, probably with antibiotics and something to control the itch while the flea medication starts to work. A medicated shampoo may be beneficial as well.

I'm sorry you are having such problems with fleas! I have personally found, as have a number of my colleagues, that there is resistance to Frontline and pets continue to have problems with them despite applying the Frontline. I will give you the flea treatment program I typically recommend and have found to be very effective. First, I would give Shadow Capstar. It's a one time pill that starts killing fleas within 30 minutes. Then follow up with a spot on treatment, such as Advantage or Revolution. This is a treatment that has to be used once a month. You will also have to disinfect the environment, this is very important. Wash his bedding in hot soapy water, and vacuum the furniture and carpet surfaces. You can use a spray to kill fleas in the house, such as Indorex, or a flea bomb would work well to kill the fleas in the home. You may have to flea bomb the house a few times to kill all the fleas. Flea infestations can be really frustrating to manage! It sounds as though you're doing all of the right things to manage this issue. However, in recent years, I have not found Frontline Plus to be as effective as it once was. Consider talking to your vet about switching to an oral flea preventive, such as Bravecto, Nexgard, Credelio or Simparica. (All are prescription-based, which is why you'll need to first talk to your vet.) I find these medications MUCH more effective at rapidly killing several flea lifestages, which helps to break the flea life cycle (adults lay eggs, which become larvae, then pupae, then adults, which lay more eggs). Consistently giving flea preventives is the best way to resolve a flea infestation. Over the counter oral medications like Capstar are great at killing adult fleas, but only last for 24 hours. I treated both my dog and cat with frontline spray for fleas. My dog has been itching more since he was treated yesterday. My cat doesn’t seem to have a problem. There are no visible signs of fleas in either pet or in the house. What could it be?
The Frontline Spray may be irritating the dog's skin or the itching may be completely unrelated. I cannot tell you. Maybe he has an underlying allergy? Please be advised that Frontline spray only provides short term flea treatment (like 24 hours or less). The animals need monthly flea prevention with a product that lasts all month. I suggest you go to your local VETCO clinic (inside Petco) and consult with them about flea prevention for both the cat and the dog. Yes that sounds like you cat might be having fleas so no harm at all if you want to start the treatment with appropriate dosage of one of the two. I would suggest to go for Advantage though as Frontline seems not working so well at the moment.
