Why is my cat peeing outside the litter box after my schedule changed?

My cat has been marking his territory since I got home today. My schedule has changed and I’m not home as much. He keeps going in the box though.

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Shadow Fox. He may not be marking his territory, he may have a medical illness like feline idiopathic cystitis (stress can be a factor in that, and since you have had a change in schedule, that could be stress for him) or bladder stones. He will need to see a vet for this problem. If he appears otherwise healthy and happy, eats and drinks plenty, you can wait until tomorrow morning. If he appears lethargic, ill or distressed, he is straining to go but can't, he yeowls when peeing, or if the urine appears very bloody, then he should be seen by a vet ASAP. Feed him wet/canned food, add water to it, and make sure he drinks a lot of water to help flush the bladder. I hope this helps!

The only way to definitively determine if the food is responsible is to switch him, gradually, back to his old diet and see if his litterbox habits return to normal. If so, you have the option of keeping him on his old food, just feed less of it and increase his activity to facilitate weight loss. Survey the area around the home for any negative stimuli that may be causing stress. This may include recent changes in the home (furniture rearranged, new flooring, etc.), high traffic, loud noises or even feral cats outdoors that he can see through a window. A pheromone product, such as Feliway Spray or plug in diffusers, may help decrease any stress or anxiety. Additional litterboxes may also be of benefit. Use an enzymatic cleaner, such as Nature's Miracle, to thoroughly clean soiled areas. If the behavior persists or worsens (bloody urine, straining to urinate, change in thirst/urination), then Azazel should be physically examining by your veterinarian to diagnose any underlying medical

Causes of urination outside the box can be urinary tract infection, crystals in the urine, stones in the urinary tract, trauma to the area, or difficulty getting into the litterbox due to pain, or other reasons. It is important that you make an appointment to have Moon seen by your veterinarian as soon as you can to help determine the cause of his behaviour and to start treatment. If you notice his straining to urinate/unable to produce urine, this is a medical emergency and she should be seen by a vet immediately. I highly recommend speaking to your vet about having Moon neutered, as this kind of behaviour can happen in male cats as a form of marking behaviour, and sometimes having them neutered can help reduce or eliminate the marking. It is also possible that Moon is exhibiting signs of stress in his home environment. You can do the following to help make sure Moon’s environmental needs are being met. Hello, sorry to hear about Felix. This could be a one time accident, however it could be an early sign of FLUTD (feline lower urinary tract disease) which may also be referred to as FIC (Feline idiopathic cystitis). Other causes of abnormal urinations include bladder stones, urinary tract infections, and crystals in the urine. If you note any more of these behavior, it will be beneficial to have Felix examined sooner rather than later. Some cats may develop severe inflammation of their bladder which can lead to an obstruction. In the interim, you should add wet food to his diet and ensure he has readily access to copious amounts of water. Hope this helps and best of luck.

That is always frustrating when a cat starts peeing outside the litter box! It could be that Lily is suffering from feline idiopathic cystitis, bladder stones, or another medical problem causing this behavior. I would take her into a vet tomorrow for an exam. Hello and welcome to Boop by Petco. Cats will often pee in front of you if they are sick. They like to 'show' you that something is wrong. This could be behavioural however it is a very good idea to rule out any medical problem first, as urinary issues with male cats can become fatal if not treated early. (Stones can get stuck in the urethra and prevent them from peeing, which can lead to fatal potassium levels). I recommend having your cat seen by your vet. They will most likely take a sample of pee and test it for stones, crystals, and bacteria. If this is all normal then they will talk to you about behavioural causes. Some include stress (if a new animal or family member is present), having appropriate numbers and clean litter boxes always present (number of cats + 1 = number of litter boxes recommended, all cleaned daily), and other possible solutions. Some cats are very sensitive to change and stress and can develop urinary issues because of it. There are also calming food and treats that you may consider trying, Hills and Royal Canin both offer excellent diets for this. He may need time to settle in, he may need further medications to ensure his UTI is cleared, it may have recurred because of the stress of travel, he may have a condition called Feline idiopathic cystitis. This is cystitis or an inflamed bladder which has an unexplained medical cause. It is a common condition and is not normally a serious health concern, but can be very uncomfortable for your cat. FIC is more common in younger felines and episodes tend to resolve as they get older. FIC is different from a bladder infection, bladder stones or more serious urinary tract conditions, but can often present the same symptoms. I recommend getting him back in to see your vet and discuss these possibilities with them.

If her owner is dying, will this cause a cat to urinate on everything but the clean litter box?
Stress for a cat can definitely cause them to urinate outside the litter box. It is very important to rule out a medical cause for inappropriate urination like a UTI or bladder inflammation. If the issue is more behavioral in nature some suggestions I have are to have at least two litter boxes for the cat in different locations. Cleaning the litter boxes at least once a day can also be helpful (think about if you'd want to go into a very full portopotty- probably not!). The litter box should probably be uncovered and located in a quiet area. A Feliway diffuser or spray may also be helpful to reduce stress for the kitty. If this continues, please seek veterinary care as some urinary issues can be quite serious. It is best to rule out a medical cause first and then work on behavioral issues.

If this is a recent behavior change for Cuddles, the first step would be to have him examined by a vet as soon as you are able to - there are a number of medical problems that can cause accidents outside the litter box, so your vet may recommend basic blood work and other testing to check for any evidence of a problem. If everything comes back normal, then it is likely that the issue is behavioral. Having accidents like this is often a stress or anxiety-related behavior in cats - if there have been any recent changes in the household, such as a new pet or a new baby, a move to a new house, or a guest staying with you, these could all be reasons for him to be pottying in inappropriate places. There may also be something about the litter box that he finds objectionable - he may not like the type of litter provided, or the location of the box. It can sometimes take some detective work to pinpoint the problem in cases like this, so if you're still stumped, I would consider making an appo
